The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Sorry I'm a little late, today! Puppy Training Camp 101 is taking up a lot of my time these days.
Oooo...Puppy Training Camp!
Sounds like fun! :-)

Two Pingy Dingy. I’m going to a car show today but I will be here this evening
We have two corn plants growing next to our irises. From feeding the birds. :)
Good morning gardeners.
Checking in - yes that was a good thread last week. I let some green onions go long, the bulbs were as big as a small onion in the store. Chopped them and froze them, man they were pungent and I had to fight back the tears. Normally we only buy sweet onions or vidalias at the store and eat green onions when young and fresh picked. This “baby bell” squash (Bonnie I think) is a bust so far. Listed as compact but the plant is mighty big and I’ve gotten one squash - potato sized. Not as big as the picture. Everything else doing good, starting to get some ripe tomatoes. Chinese long bean all flowering. Still picking green beans, swiss chard, dill and cilantro, and peppers. Lettuce all done. I may let one red and one white romaine go to seed. I can’t help myself. Although here in west Michigan buying plants is the way to go. Happy gardening this next week.
Re: letting lettuce go to seed. Does the lettuce from those seeds taste like the plant itcame from? I think ours tasted more bitter.
Diana would know. I have saved seed in the past with success but not lettuce.
” Puppy Training Camp 101”
So, did you get a passing grade? :]
Puppy lessons are soooooo worth it!
Thanks for the heads up!
After week after week of pulling the repeatedly appearing Canadian Thistles in the pachysandra beds ............ we are seeing fewer and fewer ...... almost as few as the number of decent Democrats appearing in Congress.
Another great summer for tomatoes.
My garlic is tall and ripening, so should be harvesting that soon.
Puppy training is as much as training the dog owner
as it is to train the puppy
Combines visual and verbal cues for obedience.
My garden is pretty much wiped out. After the removal of the poke berry plants (I’m an expert on growing those!) there’s not much left. A tomato plant; maybe two. And something else (unknown but the sucker is still 5-6 feet tall).
NONE of the onion bulbs seemed to have survived. While they all grew 18” to 2-foot stems it must have ate up the bulbs because there’s nothing left. There were at least 15 in pots and there’s just - nothing. Maybe I let them go 30-45 days too long? Oh well.
My transplants look weak - I’m still protecting them from the Sun and it’s not oppressively hot. But I may have over watered the soil - haven’t watered since I put them down.
It looks like the pepper plants will make it though. Maybe a couple of the tomato plants (there were about a dozen).
So it will be pretty small whatever I get this year.
They did a survey and found that people would be willing to pay more money for colored peppers. With this in mind they developed the Jalapeno Orange Spice, the Jalapeno Lemon Spice and the Jalapeno Pumpkin Spice. This is my fist season growing them and I'm very happy with the results. My wife loves to scoop out the seeds, fill them with cheese, wrap bacon around them and pop them on the grill. Yum!
Damn that sounds good ...
You can actually buy a Jalapeno pepper cooker on Amazon. It’s basically a piece of sheet metal with some holes in it. I use an aluminium baking pan that I cover with foil. Then I poke holes into the foil, each one the size of the pepper we want to cook. It works great and you don’t have to worry about the peppers falling over.
