July 27, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 07/27/2019 7:18:06 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

[My wife loves to scoop out the seeds, fill them with cheese, wrap bacon around them and pop them on the grill. Yum!]

I like it. What kind of cheese?

That’s what I was thinking. Didn’t know how well it would hold up on the grill.

If it’s not a hybrid, it should breed true to the parents. I’ve always thought that bitterness came with age and hot weather.

I have a California Wonder bell pepper that is very underwhelming. I don’t even think it’s a foot tall yet and it’s been in the ground for at least two months. Also, the peppersare tiny little thin skinned things. I usually just buy bell peppers for that reason instead of planting them.

I’m in California and I Wonder if the dang rhing will ever grow.

Meanwhile my jalepeno plant is looking good about three feet tall and covered in fruit.

Squash still trickling in, lots of maters for smallish plants but they’re still green and cucumbers finally showung signs of setting fruit.

I probably won’t be able to can anything out of here.

Unrealistic expectations-just the peremiter of a small backyard.

Puppy Training Camp is a lot of work for us all. They’re two days in, and are kind of getting the hang of Kennel Life.

I can see where it would be tough, since they’ve been footloose and fancy free for 3 & 4 months, now. The oldest one (4 month old Plott Hound) is having the hardest time, as he’s had the most freedom. Frankly, he’s kind of a JERK, but there’s one in every class, LOL!

They’ll get with the program soon enough. Repetition, repetition, repetition! :)

Yes, I got a passing grade, but only because I grade on a curve. ;)

If it’s any consolation, my onions were awful this year; not many made it because we had so. much. rain. :(

However, my local grower must have higher ground as his sweet yellow onions are awesome this season, and I will buy more from him! :)

I don’t know about California but here in west Michigan my peppers always need much more water than I think. When I pull the plants in the fall I am always amazed at the tremendous root systems. If I grow them in huge patio pots they retain much more water and I get heavy yields. But I am too old to mess with big pots now and they are in the raised bed garden with everything else. Low yields again! So the only advice I can give you is water water water.

I learned about lettuce seedlings completely by accident. I had a pot of lettuces that did their thing, and they looked so funky-cool when going to seed, I just left them in the pot. Later, probably around mid-September, I noticed a lot of little seedling on the ground around the pot, so I dug them up and transplanted them to a bed and had an extended lettuce season.

They tasted just fine. In my experience, bitterness in lettuce usually comes from too hot of weather, the plant being past its prime and/or a lack of regular watering. They like a lot of nutrition, so use a high-nitrogen fertilizer or a lot of newly finished compost.

Hope that helps!

Brilliant marketing. I’m a SUCKER for those smaller, colored peppers sold together in a bag no matter what time of year it is, or what I’ve grown myself!

Two thoughts off the top of my flat head:

Have you been in a heat wave? Over 85 degrees for a number of days in a row, they won’t set fruit/beans.

Also, too much water can cause that as well.

Isn’t it amazing how so many of us are having problems with things that we’d normally take for granted? Yeesh!

Who can’t grow zucchini? Well, ME for one, this season. And my beans are JUST starting to develop beans (bush and pole; didn’t seem to matter) and I would usually already be sick to death of them by now, LOL!

SE Idaho checking in. We got young zucchini to fry for tomorrow and 1st pick for the peas. I already harvested my radishes, the late ones get hot and pithy. Lots of green tomatoes none ripe yet. The corn is doing great if it doesn’t freeze early should be canning by September. The June 20th frost burnt down my green beans but so far since I’m not complaining. Onions are doing good, lettuce and spinach are going to seed soon. Being this is the Rockies, I enjoy what I get and hope for the best. I planted another Honeycrisp apple tree, now if I can get it through this coming winter. Hope everyone has a great, safe, weekend.

I was wondering about that too. I could go with a regular cheddar, maybe even Colby Jack(!).

Now, I must find a good cheese shop around here....perhaps the finest in the district.....

They couldn’t be out of cheese, of course.
