Whether Chablis, Sancerre, or Pomerol, French wine is better than American wine. But President Trump is right to threaten tariffs over a French tax on U.S. technology companies. Trump explained his position on Twitter.Don't get me wrong, I support free trade. But free trade must flow both ways. In turn, the U.S. cannot sit idle when other nations take unfair advantage of American companies. And tariffs offer a rough but effective tool to force reconsideration of unfair actions. Such is the case with France's technology tax.

I am sure that there are plenty of purveyors in the U.S. wine industry that would take umbrage with that statement.

Some of the wine produced in France us very good; some is actually awful!

Italian wine is good and so are the many of the wines produced here, in the good old U.S.A.!

Lots of nations have good wine...Hungary, RSA, Portugal,to name but a few others.

True and yes, there are even more; I just listed a few, instead of a comprehensive list.

And to wade into the minutiae...there are many states, here, that produce excellent wines; some which might even surprise most people.

Back when California was still part of the United States, and property rights and environmental laws were still reasonable, California vineyards had finally achieved superiority over French vineyards, which lasted a decade. Once California’s laws became more stringent in the 2000’s, the vineyards went south very fast, and now is essentially a shell of its competitive position. Now with water rights completely thrown out of whack, except for a few of the favored (i.e., connected with progressive crony capitalist friends of Democrats), vineyards, it’s mostly gone the way of the rest of the state.

There is no true French wine anymore. Their vines were all dying and they had to graft them on to California vines to save them. The only real French grapes left in the world are in Chile. Do a search for the great French wine blight.

Especially because US wines were among the top (including Australia, S. Africa, Argentina and Chile) in every category except Riesling in 2007 and took the top spot in every category in 2008.

There was a movie made about 10 years ago that traces the ascendancy of American wine making. It's called Bottle Shock starring Alan Rickman and Bill Pullman. I highly recommend it. I'm confident that it will appeal to Deplorable tastes.
