I am sure that there are plenty of purveyors in the U.S. wine industry that would take umbrage with that statement.

There is no true French wine anymore. Their vines were all dying and they had to graft them on to California vines to save them. The only real French grapes left in the world are in Chile. Do a search for the great French wine blight.

Especially because US wines were among the top (including Australia, S. Africa, Argentina and Chile) in every category except Riesling in 2007 and took the top spot in every category in 2008.
There was a movie made about 10 years ago that traces the ascendancy of American wine making. It's called Bottle Shock starring Alan Rickman and Bill Pullman. I highly recommend it. I'm confident that it will appeal to Deplorable tastes.
