America is in a high-stakes battle with China over the future of wireless. But sometimes it seems like only Beijing realizes it.
Business as usual has allowed our wireless-technology industry to atrophy or move overseas, while China presses ahead with an explicit plan to dominate wireless technology and wireless networks worldwide.
Our big wireless carriers say there’s nothing to worry about. But their dirty secret is that they are marketing and customer-service outfits, not technology leaders.
Asking a carrier to secure the future of wireless technology is like asking a Walgreens employee to invent the next blockbuster drug. Walgreens is a great business, but it isn’t in the business of invention. Fifty years ago, AT&T owned Bell Labs. Today Nokia does. It’s still out there in northern New Jersey, but it’s a shadow of its former self.
This is the fate of our entire wireless-technology industry unless we do something, and quickly, to flip the table on Xi Jinping. The Chinese will own the technology, and we will have no one else to buy it from but them.
Seven years ago, the US government sought to fill a gap in our communications infrastructure by setting aside dedicated, nationwide spectrum for first responders. As happens all too often in Washington, that effort was captured by big-business interests, and the First Responder Network became just another subsidy for AT&T.
Today, we have another chance to fill a gap and meet a pressing national need in wireless. The Trump administration has taken important steps to enforce our laws and punish Huawei for flouting export restrictions and stealing intellectual property. But we can do more.
We have to start by recognizing that fifth-generation, or 5G, networks will be different. They will require new technology but also new business models, new structures and new ways

Most of this 5G stuff is going to be of even shorter range, leaving vast areas in Fly Over Country even more unserved.
China cannot be allowed to own 5g. It’s more than just connection speed, a LOT more.
5g will be fast but very problematic. Distance, walls are the enemy among other things. It’s pretty erratic so devices will need a Lot of caches for all the misses and retries.
Not sure the author has the cred to comment on what’s going on or not going on with 5G.

How it's supposed to work: 5G is faster. 5G has lower latency (doesn't have to reconnect, which all phones do under the hood even when it doesn't seem like it). 5G will have the ability to connect to multiple devices.
How it works now: Available in the U.S. in only a few places and the high frequency makes distance and walls a problem. There were similar problems with 3G and 4G, though, and the more widespread signal towers and purchase of 5G devices will remedy that just like it did with 3G and 4G.
How it'll work in the near future (my prediction): Early versions of 5G devices will be backwards compatible to 4G until most urban areas have 5G.
How it'll work, say, 2 years from now: We may be looking at a point where the signal frequency is too high to never be truly 5G most of the times even in high density areas (thus many cell towers). Too high a frequency = it won't carry a long distance or through walls, even with improved devices. It's analogous to music with high frequency (i.e. electric guitars and cymbals) not carrying through walls or a long distance as low frequency sounds (i.e. bass drum and bass guitar). So we may be looking at the 4G towers never completely going away like 1G and 2G has. It may be that all phones from now on will have to be 4G compatible (unlike, say, your 4G phone not having to be compatible with 2G, but if it's an early 4G phone it might be compatible with 3G).
So all that to say, that the 5G experience of the future will probably be like having a 4G phone in a rural area (my area is sorta rural). I can watch videos on my phone through the cell service with a decent, not great, experience. But there's a big difference using the same phone when I'm in my house using the wi-fi, even if I don't have to manually switch over to wi-fi because my phone does it automatically (after I set it up the first time). I think that's how 5G will be even in urban areas -- where the awesomeness of 5G is intermittent as you walk around the city and every now and then it drops down to 4G in quality. It'd probably be better for the cell carriers to offer a wi-fi service in the high density areas using multiple routers in many businesses (i.e. one on each block) and the wi-fi point named the same thing so you can walk around and always be connected to the wi-fi service, even as you move from router to router (like many businesses and universities already do for their students to walk around campus and be connected to one wi-fi from many points).

A couple of tariffs should help, because I'm sure China is willing to give spyware laden hardware and software out for a pittance.

My take is that 5g is not so much new technology but a lot more antennas which means smaller cells and more re-use of frequencies which means higher bandwidth for each frequency in a given small cell.
It also means big brother will know more precisely where our devices are. 5g gives big brother more. It may give us a little more.
Those in the boonies will be just fine with existing cellular technologies.
My damn iPad keeps switching my network to 5-G and the damn thing doesn’t work, I have to constantly go into settings and switch it back!!!
There are vast areas starting just two miles from the compound that currently have NO service.
People in the cities will have higher cancer raties than the boonies.

When it comes to Huawei there are many privacy concerns. China has what they call "national champion" companies (hint: not Clemson or Alabama). Basically, those companies are practically owned by the government and, therefore, all of the government's resources are used to make the company successful. In return, the company by law has to report to the government anything it learns about anybody or any business. It's one of many ways China engages in Intellectual Property theft (IP theft), which harms us in many ways. IMHO the IP theft is the main part in the trade war talks with China.
