The Washington Monument has been transformed into a stunning tribute to the first moon landing through a dazzling series of projections. Crowds packed the National Mall to watch the 17-minute show, which was projected three times each on Friday and Saturday, marking the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. Cheers rose from the crowd as the Saturn V rocket was seen lifting off. The show also included various scenes of the stages separating, the moon landing, and splash-down as the hero astronauts returned to Earth.

My dad a space enthusiast took us kids down with him to watch the launch. There were people from everywhere, remember my dad spending time talking to a guy from Australia. We slept on the ground in a big parking lot along with everyone else next to highway then got up and watched the launch across a body of water. It really was amazing.

You left out the part about the rocket being built by Nazi war criminals protected by the white supremacists.

Thomas Jefferson toward the end of his life wrote that seeing progress being made gave him motivation to live as long as possible.

So glad to hear they had such a magnificent observation of the moon landing anniversary in DC. In fact, there were many more commemorations throughout the nation, many more than I expected during the anti-American PC age we live in today.

Did you happen to notice if there were a lot of young people in the crowd? Or mostly older people (like me) waxing nostalgic on the America of our youth?

Then, we built giant rockets and went to the moon.

Now, we pretend with a movie show on a monument, and hitch rides into space on Russian rockets.

What an amazing experience!

I grew up on Babbitt’s Ranch North of Flagstaff, AZ and they tested the moon buggy out there. One day my mother was driving my brother and I across the ranch and we could see them driving that buggy around. We begged my mother to go where they were so we could see better and MEET THE ASTRONAUTS!! She said no, all those men were very busy and we were not bothering them while they were working. She did pull over to the side and let us watch a while from a distance. I will never forget that day.

There were a lot of 20 somethings and young families with children there - the “scooter” makes access for them easier.

Ok, I’m not a conspiracy nut, or anything, I think the US did go to the moon and back.

But - I’ve always wondered, and explain it like i’m 5 (ELI5), where did the cameras that took this picture (or the video from which this frame came), or the video of the LEM actually touching down, etc.?

I mean, did the LEM fly by and drop 20 cameras then the next pass land? The camera is just about perfectly placed to see the LEM land, center frame - and this one is pretty close to perfect to have Neil and the flag, again, center frame. How did those cameras get there, before our guys were on the ground?

That picture looks like it was part of the sequence that Armstrong took as Aldrin saluted the flag.

Then the cameras and cameras went to Harlem, to a park, where a “soul concert” was going on. No one was “tuned in on portable radios, etc., and the crew interviewed a couple of guys watching various musicians

Perhaps they were there to listen to Gil Scott-Heron

Think that is going to change now that we have a real American as our President.

I was there for the 830 show, it was way more impressive than I was expecting. What blew me away was the launch, the sound system did an unbelievable job simulating a Saturn 5 launch. You felt the power of that rocket in your chest. The crowd was very much into it, and it was a hugely diverse crowd. I must have heard at least a dozen different languages and the majority of the attendees were very cordial. It was a fun time even tho I don’t usually enjoy huge crowds.

No, that rocket was built by Rocketdyne by plain old ordinary run-of-the mill Americans.

There are no movies of the landing from external cameras. I think you are confusing simulations or Hollywood movies with the actual landing.

There were many companies involved with the actual construction of the various parts of the "stack", well over 600,000 engineers and scientists.

Perhaps you are referring to Werner Von Braun and his team that was retrieved from Germany after the war. While German production facilities did utilize forced labor under inhumane conditions, those factories were operated by the SS, not the science team or even Albert Speers. Von Braun did not control those factories; and, was appalled when he made a visit to one.

This has been rehashed by legal eagles numerous times. Almost none would argue that Von Braun or any on his team were war criminals. They spend all of their time in the research centers where only scientists, mathematicians, and engineers were present.

Those men designed/specified the rocket stack and heavily influenced other designs. A great deal of the engineering and all of the construction occurred outside of NASA.
