How three black women helped send John Glenn into orbit

A new film, Hidden Figures, tells the story of the maths wizards who Nasa relied on.

When John Glenn was waiting to be fired into orbit aboard Friendship 7 in 1962, there was one person he trusted with the complex trajectory calculations required to bring him down safely from his orbital spaceflight: Katherine Johnson, an African-American mathematician who worked in Nasa’s segregated west area computers division.

“Get the girl, check the numbers,” Glenn said before boarding the rocket. “If she says they’re good, I’m good to go.”

Johnson was one of three female African-American mathematicians known as the “computers in skirts” who worked on the Redstone, Mercury and Apollo space programmes for Nasa. Now, thanks to an award-tipped movie, Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan are about to become more widely celebrated.

4 And look at their names -- Karen, Mary, Dorothy. Not Quasheena, Latonsha, Quiresha. I've always stated that those latter names originated as ghetto names, and the media et. al. elevated those to "black" names around 40 years ago.

I was told by a public school teacher from Savannah, GA, that the transmorgrifcation of African-American names was a result of the ABC mini-series, "Roots" (book author = Alex Haley) broadcast in JAN 1977. Think, Kunte Kinta.

“John Glenn would not have been stationed at Langley tho. He was a Marine.”

He was a test pilot on the Mercury Program at Langley Field. That’s where they trained.

Now that I think about it there was a NASA presence there including a big wind tunnel.

You are correct that there are many fabrications in this movie. For example, Kevin Costner’s character and several others in the film did not exist at all.

BEWARE OF HOLLYWOOD FEEL-GOOD MOVIES...they are usually full of falsehoods and people that never existed.

Doubtful, since blacks were still slaves at that time and had no chance to advance themselves in that fashion.

I mean, the whole modern narrative has to be changed if true.

I have heard this before and I think its BS. Not that these women didn’t work at NASA I just think their roll is pretty much fabricated. They would have been much more visible had they played the critical role this story alleges. Calculating trajectories? Horse puckey. Where are the pics of them at mission control?

"Why would Glenn micro-manage the launch?"

Because he was riding with it. That gives him veto power.
