At an Onyejekwe family get-together, you cant throw a stone without hitting someone with a masters degree. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, professors every family member is highly educated and professionally successful, and many have a lucrative side gig to boot. Parents and grandparents share stories of whose kid just won an academic honor, achieved an athletic title or performed in the school play. Aunts, uncles and cousins celebrate one anothers job promotions or the new nonprofit one of them just started. To the Ohio-based Onyejekwes, this level of achievement is normal. Theyre Nigerian-American its just what they do.
Today, 29 percent of Nigerian-Americans over the age of 25 hold a graduate degree, compared to 11 percent of the overall U.S. population, according to the Migrations Policy Institute. Among Nigerian-American professionals, 45 percent work in education services, the 2016 American Community Survey found, and many are professors at top universities. Nigerians are entering the medical field in the U.S. at an increased rate, leaving their home country to work in American hospitals, where they can earn more and work in better facilities. A growing number of Nigerian-Americans are becoming entrepreneurs and CEOs, building tech companies in the U.S. to help people back home.

Africans tend to look at American Blacks with contempt. American Blacks have everything and yet they throw it away.
To: CondoleezzaProtege
I taught at an all black high school and the Nigerians were both picked on relentlessly and the valedictorians every year.

If the pattern is the same in Nigeria as elsewhere in Sub-Saharan Africa, it’s because their government sucks.
The people I have known in eSwatini (fka Swaziland) are some of the hardest working, humorous, and joyful people in the world. Most Swazis might share complexion and some physical features in common with US citizens of African ancestry and that’s about all the similarity there is.
The country itself has some beautiful places in it, but overall, it is a heartbreaking ——hole. But for the King (Mswati III), his 14 wives, his family, and his buddies, life is peachy...

I only worked with one guy from Nigeria, and he was the prince of scammers. He’d rather con you than do work, even if the work was easier to do than the con.
To: CondoleezzaProtege
Well, they’re all princes and princesses, or they’ve inherited mega-bucks from other princes...so of course they’re successful.
Good on the smart ones if they got out and did well here. Those are the kinds of immigrants we need, not ones who come here to pop out a kid and get on welfare and free medical.

I got involved with a Nigerian Christian church for a while after I sold them their church building. There were no slackers in this congregation. They were all well educated and had good jobs or were in university.
I got to know the pastor very well. His children were all high achievers. They had been in North America a long time and spoke correct English without an accent that I could detect.

That’s how it should be.

Because Nigeria like most African countries is made up of a dozen ethnic groups and has a large Muslim population in the North to boot. Most Nigerian immigrants are Igbo who are Christian and have the highest IQ out of any other ethnic group in Africa. This is actually going to make Nigeria worse because the brain drain means all of the talented people are going to flee elsewhere.

One category that's missing, due to PC, is Jewish American. My guess that this is far and away the highest income category, perhaps by a multiple of 2. What the author of this article accomplished, bare-faced lies of omission, is fairly standard for the journalistic profession since before Upton Sinclair set the standard by writing fiction that everyone assumed to be non-fiction. Here, the writer isn't even pretending that this is fiction.
