LAN Outlet to Wireless/Vanity

Posted on 07/18/2019 9:53:43 AM PDT by Allen In Texas Hill Country

After this I'll try and keep my Himedia problems quiet for awhile. I moved it a few rooms away from the router and now its wireless interface cannot see the home network. But the TV right above it can?????

So how does one connect a LAN outlet to a wireless interface/unit? I've been poking around and see several items but was wondering if someone else already went thru this. I didn't want to get one that might not do the job. One reply from my previous query described all the things the Himedia box can do but obviously needs to be connected and it has to be a high speed interface. I have a gigabit router that my TV and other devices use.

There are many, many USB wireless plugins but not one wireless unit that plugs into the LAN interface on a box. :<(( The IOGEAR GWU637 doesn't appear to be that fast and I'm not sure it does what I want....

Thanks for any input.

Get a Wifi wireless extender and put it halfway between the router and your computer.

You have to connect to it physically to have it connect to your router but after that it’s like a repeater for your wifi.

Maybe a signal booster — those plug in a wall socket somewhere midway between source and use, and just send and receive. You’ll want them plugged into a surge suppressor.

OK, wifi booster. Off and looking. Thanks. Wasn’t thinking in that direction.

Get one of these. It will light up your whole house and then some. I used to light up whole condo buildings with these.

It could be that your router is not broadcasting it’s identity. That’s a setting.

You can change the setting or type in the name of the router directly.

Your new device may net be set to automatically find connections.

You can change that setting or type in the name of your router directly.

Do you know to run coax? Call your local Satellite dish dealer and splice an X.25 over T1, muxed through a TS with a TTLP stack.

This will cost free to $10. Get an old wireless router and use it as a slave or range extender. Print these instructions or any others you prefer if you need specifics for your new box manual setup.

https://www.tomsguide.com/us/how-to-turn-old-router-into-wifi-extender,review-5166.html

Before you start, log into your router (http://[your-router-IP-address]. You do know your admin password, right? From the WAN settings, copy down the gateway, subnet, DNS1 and DNS2. You can ignore the LAN side unless you have manually assigned addresses. Usually in the wireless menu, it will tell you what the IP range is for manual and wireless connections. Copy down the SSID, channel in use if not auto, mode (like C or N. You may need some of this info.

1. Disconnect everything from your comp. Plug your comp into the LAN side of the new box. Dump old settings on the new box. With newer Windows you may have to reboot to ‘find’ the router.
2. Configure the new box manually per the instructions.
3. Restore original cables as before starting. Maybe a Windows reboot again?
4. At the nether end, plug the LAN cable into the WAN side of the new box.
5. Test with your laptop and/or phone.

The router is broadcasting its SSID. Its just that the Himedia box wireless interface is not as powerful as one would hope. Thats why I was trying to find a wireless unit that plugs into the LAN/wire socket. Thats to answer “English please” query.

have an old wireless router? Those can be used as wireless hubs if you set the settings right.

Is the LAN outlet in the same room as the Himedia box? Does the LAN outlet connect back to your router? If yes, install a Wireless Access point on the LAN outlet.

Thanks for all the input. First, don’t get old. When I bought the box back when, it was for viewing videos only. Didn’t care about Kodi this or Hulu that. But now that its summertime I was wondering what else the box could do with an internet connection. After much much poking around I finally realized that the antenna had not been attached to the box. :<(((((((

Fixing that.

Get an adapter that will route the internet through your electrical system... basically one plugs into the wall by your router and connects to the router/modem via cat) cable and the other plugs into a socket near your device and takes a cat6 from your device to this connector. I signal degradation.
