ORLEANS, Mass. — Dozens of sharks have been spotted lurking in the shallow waters off of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Over 30 sightings were reported along the Cape in the past week alone, according to data from the Atlantic Great White Conservancy's app Sharktivity.

As we discussed on an earlier thread, the white sharks have arrived in Massachusetts waters.

There seems to be more than usual, but that may be because bathers, boaters, fishermen etc are paying more attention to what is in the water and reporting it.

Spotter pilots have no trouble seeing them since a view from above is far superior to a sea level view.

When I was doing a lot of shark fishing and up in a tower I could see sharks coming to the boat long before the people in the cockpit. Being in a plane hundreds of feet higher is so much better.

The tagging and filming operation has moved into the Boston/ Plymouth side of the Cape, into the Bay, and they are having no problem finding white sharks.

More people will be in the relatively warmer water in August and September and that is when Incidents will happen. - Tom

Seems like drones could be helpful with spotting sharks.

As I believe most of us know, Jaws was filmed primarily in Martha's Vineyard...not too far from the Cape.

They predicted this because they won’t cull the seal population. I kept hearing all winter that this summer was going to be a huge great white shark surge in Massachusetts etc.

That’s the shark’s domain.

I understand there are now realtime shark spotting applications.

Only issue, though, is putting the app on your cell phone may be "spotty" at best on the cape because of sub-par cell coverage.

Absolutely.

The recent shot of two white sharks interacting here was shot by a drone.
One shark may have bitten the other.
I haven't read a definitive answer yet. Is it a bite or a mating ploy or a territorial dispute or what? - Tom

A shark infiltration of this scale hasn’t happened since 1974!

I didn’t know global warming went back that far, but maybe!

Because if they are close to shore they can outswim a shark?!

My son read about a surfer leash that is shown to repel sharks away. They are using them in Australia. I know it sounds crazy but it apparently is working. So far.......

Ok I just looked up surfer leaches.

Its a cord that keeps you from losing your surfboard.
So your fastened to something that floats.

Doesn’t that it the bobber & your the bait?

Sharks can only tolerate a variation of a tenth of a degree in water temperature. Back then they were fleeing from global cooling in the north. Now that the ocean is boiling nearly everywhere below the 40th parallel, they are fleeing back north

Another place with a LOT of Great White shark sightings is the Pacific Ocean between the Golden Gate and the Farallon Islands. Mostly because of the huge pinniped population in these waters.

Encouraging seals to breed in MA gives the sharks a buffet. Putting people in the water gives the sharks a appetizer. Besides most massholes vote Democrat so what’s the loss if a few get eaten

Through the years many devices have been tried and all seem to fail eventually.

Since the likelihood of a shark attack is so small telling a person to carry lock of his mothers hair will keep sharks away will work ; until it doesn't.

They have tried everthing that might sell like;
Electrical repellents , Magnetic repellents, Acoustic repellents, Spray repellenst Changing board & wetsuitcolors, Shark-deterring wetsuits.

They will all work until they don't work. - Tom
