Surveillance photos have been released of a man suspected of stealing the San Luis Obispo police chiefs gun after she forgot it in a restaurant bathroom Wednesday.

Even though my gun was in a holster, it didnt stay clipped to my pants, so I removed it, and I placed it next to me, Cantrell said.
She exited the bathroom without the gun, and by the time she realized it was missing a few minutes later, she returned to find it gone.
Police checked security video and determined that three customers entered the restroom between the time Cantrell had used it and then noticed her gun missing.

Why was it in the mens room?
Generally, Sheriff’s are elected, and Police Chief’s are appointed by a mayor or city council.

As a purely practical matter there is a lot to be said for lanyards to prevent this sort of accident.
I always did a inventory after visiting the restroom while wearing my duty belt. After doing the inventory i would do a visual sweep of the stall. In 25 years I managed to never forget my gun. However, I knew co-workers who weren’t as assiduous in accounting for their equipment.
