Visitors to a hot spring in central Japan will soon be able to snack on $460 grapes, or rather, grape.
That's after the manager of a chain of hot spring hotels in Ishikawa Prefecture, on the northern coast of the main Honshu island, became the winning bidder for a bunch of Ruby Roman grapes at an auction in Kanazawa on Tuesday. Takashi Hosokawa will pay 1.2 million yen, or around $11,000, for the 24 plump, deep red grapes prized for their juiciness, high sugar content and low acidity. It's the most expensive bunch since the breed came to market 12 years ago, the auctioneers said.
"We offered 1.2 million yen to mark the 12 years and to celebrate Reiwa's first auction," Hosokawa told reporters, referring to the country's new era, which began in May with the coronation of Emperor Naruhito.

What would wine made from this veriety cost for a bottle?
I tasted cotton candy grapes last week. They might actually be worth that.
When we lived on a farm, Daddy always planted “Padgett melons” which were deep red and delicious. They were very large round ones. Daddy would always scratch a big “X” on the biggest prettiest one. It was to be used as seed.
I decided to plant some myself and asked my Uncle if anyone still had the seeds. He told me that Lige Padgett still had them. I was too embarrassed to admit that I did not know who that was.
The ones I got from the seed store were good too but not quite as tasty.
If they use the grape seeds, they might be eventually worth the price.
I have a large, long scuppernong arbor. The guy who owned the house before me planted it. There are at least 6 different types of grapes many of them entertwined. Some are almost too sweet and others not so good but still edible.
Better to buy grapes than spend it on drugs.
They look like wild Texas plumbs or Persimmons.

They're getting old...fast.
Aww yer just raisin' trubble again!
Let's do the math:
$460 a grape multiplied by the 700 grapes you need to make a bottle = $322,000 in grapes alone.
By the time you add production costs, risk management, (a bad batch can put you in SERIOUS debt) time/cost of money, and decent some markup, you're looking at $1m+ per bottle.
“I tasted cotton candy grapes last week. They might actually be worth that.”
Aren’t those amazing? They actually do taste like cotton candy! Another interesting one is called a moon drop. They look like a tiny eggplants. Delicious, and fun to eat.
Grapes dont keep; he must have enough people ready to pay a fortune right now.
