DOn't see a discussion thread on Acosta's press conference. Is anyone else watching?
Not the best at public speaking?
____________
I think you may be somewhat wrong.
He is overly careful with his words and he speaks haltingly, but ...... he just may be pretty honest (and, he strangely begins nearly every answer with the lame conjunction, "so").
I know nothing about all this "legalese", but this guy's demeanor is quite hard to read for me.
lol
He smirked, smiled, and made reference to Alice in Wonderland and rabbit holes going nowhere.
Did Acosta break any laws? If not, everything thrown at him should be responded to by saying, so?
It doesn't have to implicate Trump in the Epstein scandal.
The Democrats have been trying to rob Trump of his team; one by one they've been working to pick off his Cabinet Secretaries to cripple or hobble him.
At the minimum, losing Acosta forces Trump to nominate a new Labor Secretary, which gives Senate Democrats a new opportunity to use a confirmation hearing as a platform to bash Trump in the leadup to the 2020 elections.
A confirmation hearing would be held by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, and Labor. That committee is chaired by Lamar Alexander, and the Democrat Ranking Member is Patty Murray. Also on the committee is Bernie Sanders (Committee Minority Leader) and Elizabeth Warren.
You can be sure that Sanders and Warren would use the platform to disrupt and attack President Trump, as well as elevate their Presidential campaigns.
That's the danger of not seeing the further out implications of what the Democrats do. Getting Acosta tossed opens up a high profile platform for Democrats to bash the Trump administration, just like how they did with the Kavanaugh hearings just prior to the 2018 elections.

Laf. Thanks.
That said, Acosta was a FEDERAL prosecutor and this was a state crime. He had no role at all; the feds usually wait for the state to adjudicate and then look for interstate angles to justify their involvement.
What Acosta did at the urging of the Palm Beach Chief of Police was to step out of his lane and pressure Epstein to plead guilty to one count of a state crime, not a federal crime. So whatever “legalese” Acosta is saying is to explain why he had no jurisdiction to act, but stepped into the state business anyway due to the heinousness of the crime.
Does this help to put Acosta’s actions and words into context? BTW, I got all this only from listening to Ann Coulter on Breitbart Radio last night, because she’s been on top of this story since 2005.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
from what I heard acosta was assertive in getting a conviction & registration on epstein.
I agree that long knives are out to take down another of trump’s secretary (who is not guilty of anything) just to make trump look bad.
Acosta is not an honorable man.
The country deserves better.
Never send a lawyer to talk to people over emotionally charged matters in front of a media with cameras. The media know nothing about legal processes, jurisdiction, prosecution guidelines, state vs. Federal jurisdiction, airports of entry, flight records, customs inspection of arriving flights (yes, even return flights), or private aviation.
Yep, blackdog.
Last night on Breitbart Radio on Sirius XM, Coulter sad that the real bad actor in all this was Florida’s Palm Beach County State Attorney Barry Krischer.
Krischer was all over the case when Palm Beach Police told him of their case without mentioning names, but he sabotaged the case once he found out it was Epstein.
...
Thanks for bringing up some facts.
Acosta made a great opening statement. FReepers should watch that before making up their minds.
Acosta should have given out the phone numbers and names of the Palm Beach County prosecutors office in the state of Florida. Then said, “so call them”.
They may have heard the girls say things about taking flights, but do we know that the PB PD had jurisdiction to look at flight logs for a county matter?
You could be right, but it appears that this was a story that emerged slowly over a 10-month period in the early 2000s, starting with young girls loitering around Epstein's home at odd hours. I don't know the timeline, but I can't say when the PD or the feds knew specifics about the travel.

FROM WHOM?
(NY Times)
Cyrus Vances Office Sought Reduced Sex-Offender Status for Epstein
July 9, 2019
During a hearing in 2011, a seasoned sex-crimes prosecutor from Mr. Vances office argued forcefully in court that Mr. Epstein, who had been convicted in Florida of soliciting an underage prostitute, should not be registered as a top-level sex offender in New York.
Instead, the prosecutor, Jennifer Gaffney, asked a judge to reduce Mr. Epsteins sex-offender status to the lowest possible classification, which would have limited the personal information available to the public, and would have kept him from being listed on a registry of sex offenders for life.
Justice Ruth Pickholz vehemently denied the request and expressed incredulity that the district attorneys office would argue in support of a man accused of sexually molesting dozens of teenage girls in Florida.
I have to tell you, Im a little overwhelmed because I have never seen a prosecutors office do anything like this, the judge told Ms. Gaffney.
Mr. Vance has said the request was a mistake and had been made by Ms. Gaffney without his knowledge.
Vance has a history of going easy on high-profile pervs.
His office let disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein off the hook after the producer admittedly groped a model in 2015 and it was later revealed that Vance had received $26,550 in campaign donations from Weinsteins lawyer, with some of the dough coming after the investigation was dropped.

I guess I'll wait to hear or read what that was. Can't really tell what happened at this presser based on comments so far.
In this world of gotcha “journalism” I feel Acosta did well stating his position and he made me more fully understand that this was a state case and as federal prosecutor he could only do so much, and at least got Epstein registered as sex predator, restitution and jail time.
If I load six friends in a plane, fly to Ft. Pierce Fl., fly to an island in the Bahamas, return to any US airport of entry, and don’t wait for customs to review my passengers, cargo, and interview anyone for any purpose, they can seize my plane on the ramp and cut it apart, as well as lock up every passenger and pilot.
