THERE is a backlash growing across Asia against Western ‘begpackers’ who want the locals to fund their travels around the world.

People across the continent are growing tired of the sight of seeing relatively affluent Westerns begging on the streets in the hope that locals help pay for their journey to the next destination.

Unlike the foreigners who show up here and just want the locals to fund their healthcare, food stamps, Obamaphone, etc.

Wow, I thought the complaint would be against American sponges, figuring they learned this from the fake homeless ‘industry’ here on US streetcorners. No doubt there are many, but in this article the complaint is against Aussies, Brits and Russians. I thought street corner sympathy frauds were just a US embarrassment.

At least people in Asia aren’t forced to fund these people. In the US, taxpayers have no choice.

Exactly. I’m guessing these “begpackers” believe in one world government, so why shouldn’t money be passed around?

A few years ago I rode a Sinh Café van from Đà Nãnh to Nha Trang with a bunch of backpackers. There was a Finnish couple, a Spanish fortyish woman who had been doing it for 20 years, a year of trucking about in Asia and a year at a University, the Sorbonne or Oxford etc., a Czech an a really obnoxious Hindu who was instructing all the others who had been doing it far longer than he on how to backpack. Turns out he was a banker in Mumbai and had fled with a legal cloud over his head. To avoid having to talk to the Hindu or even to recognize his existence i spoke only to the driver and a young Vietnamese pair of newlyweds in Vietnamese and never gave any hint that I understood or spoke English, the lingua franca of all the foreigners aboard. The Hindu got highly irritated because he just knew I must speak English.

it is outrageous for a country that struggles to take care of its poor to have a western visitor from affluence begging.

Why don’t they skip the “outrage” and just NOT give the foreign beggars anything? If there’s no payoff, ever, they will stop doing it or starve (or hop a plan home to Mommy).

Yes but at least they are in those countries legally.

We should be encouraging this type of behavior because the money they receive is given to them voluntarily by private individuals, not tax dollars forcibly removed by the government. I'm fine with this type of vagrant support.

You want a GoFundMe page for a trip to China, GREAT! Good luck with that! Just don't pay for the trip with gov't assistance.
