Metal straws may be eco-friendly, but a coroner has warned of the potential dangers they pose after a woman in England died last year in a freak accident.
Elena Struthers-Gardner, 60, sustained a traumatic brain injury after falling while carrying a mason jar-styled drinking glass that had a screw-top lid at her home in Dorset on Nov. 22, an inquest heard on Monday.
Struthers-Gardner's death was ruled an accident, with a coroner's report noting that "clearly great care" should be taken when using metal straws.
"There is no give in them at all," Assistant coroner Brendan Allen said, according to The Sun. "If someone does fall on one and its pointed in the wrong direction, serious injury can occur."
When Struthers-Gardner fell, officials said the 10-inch metal straw pierced through her eye and into her brain.
Elena's wife, Mandy, told the hearing she found her partner lying in a doorway between the kitchen and living room, The Sun reported.
"She was making unusual gurgling sounds. Her glass cup was lying on the floor still intact and the straw was still in the jar," she said Monday. "I noticed the straw was sticking into her head."
She was rushed to a hospital, but doctors told her partner the severity of her injury made it very unlikely Struthers-Gardner would survive. Her life support was eventually switched off.
The 60-year-old was a retired jockey and had mobility difficulties stemming from a horse-riding accident.
Her wife said the riding accident caused multiple fractures to Struthers-Gardner's lumbar spine and caused scoliosis, which left her prone to falling over "like a sack of potatoes" randomly," according to the Daily Mail.

You've obviously never heard of Hoppes #9 and a bronze bore brush.
Oh please, anyone’s who ever been to a party supply store has to admit that most of that stuff is pointless. I mean, you’re seriously gonna tell me that plastic (made in China) kazoos with wax paper reeds that break in an hour and can’t be replaced is a good idea just because some soccer mom occasionally makes an impulse buy? Hell, I every chance I get I go as far away from human habitation as possible, I can be two hours down a dirt road from the nearest human being, but I sure as hell can’t get away from their plastic garbage no matter how far I go because most people are fundamentally lazy a-holes who are generally happy to externalize costs/effort rather than do the right thing. The free market supplies heroin and crystal meth too, does that make taking or supplying either of them a good idea? What about illegal immigration? There’s a huge market for that too... and it isn’t the employer who bears the brunt of the costs the immigrants impose on society.
Advantages for a straw:
Keeps things tidy in a car. Very hard to drink anything in the car without one.
Keeps your lipstick in shape.
Kids make much less mess with one. Same with anyone disabled in that way.
It does reduce sugar exposure on your teeth.
Spares you pain if you have sensitive teeth.
Lots of good reasons to use straws. Imo the permanent ones are not very sanitary (yes I have a dishwasher but it doesnt derail like that! Id need to use a tiny pipe cleaner!)
I will stick with plastic.
Maybe Toby Keith will write a song about blue plastic straws to embolden the masses.
Food and history are fun. Food history is even better!
Those are just huge hypodermic tubing. Cut them at a slant.
“Keeps things tidy in a car.”
That was my first thought. Eating in the car with kids. Started in the 40’s or 50’s? No car seats. No seatbelts. Covered cups with straws...Logical solution.
Metal straw (and a convenient fall) have been the weapon of choice for this pair of “partners”.
Metal straw (and a convenient fall) have been the weapon of choice for this pair of “partners”.
From the Dark Knight movie:
The Joker: I’m gonna make this pencil disappear.
[Gambol’s thug walks over to kill The Joker, who slams his face into the pencil and kills him]
The Joker: Ta-daa! It’s... it’s gone.
We should make straws out of a safer material, like plastic.
Sounds as though she was murdered and the weapon was a metal straw.
RIP.
That is a Hillary robot that short circuited.
She was a victim of probabilities. The positioning of that straw was a low probability to fall in that exact orientation. Such is life.
Yes, the universe punched her ticket. There is no escape when you time is up.
