To end fatphobia, we need to dismantle Western civilization, says Philly therapist Sonalee Rashatwar
The Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | July 3, 2019 | Cassie Owens

Sonalee Rashatwar hadn’t planned on being a therapist growing up. Her career path, she explained while sitting in the waiting room of Radical Therapy Center, the practice she co-owns in West Philadelphia, just kind of happened.

Rashatwar, now 31, endured an abusive relationship in her early 20s. After college, she started volunteering for a domestic-violence response team, an experience that showed her that she enjoyed working with other people who had lived through traumas.

“All of my work is to better understand what I’ve experienced,” said Rashatwar, who graduated from Temple University in 2011. “It’s almost like I’m healing younger versions of myself by trying to find language to describe what happened.”

As the fat-positivity movement has gained momentum, so, too, have debates around how fat folks should lead healthy lives. Rashatwar, though, considers how sizeism is affected by racism, misogyny, classism, homophobia, transphobia, and ableism, and she counsels people against intentional weight loss.

I completely agree about the running, fast walking, or shuffling.

I am a biker (road and MTB). I put in at least 5 hours of hard cardio a week.

What people don't realize is how addictive cardio can be. I know some guys who rank it right up there with sex in terms of pleasurable activity.

Not sure I agree with the sex comparison if only because they are so different (or are they...lots of heavy breathing?).;-)

Don’t bother reading.

Her rant boils down to “I am fat and it is the fault of the white patriarchal colonial society of binary homophobes and such.

“She looked at me with her most serious nurse face...”

Well, she’s gonna tell YOU, mister.

Remember the Obamacare lifestyle components? One was counseling the obese on weight loss. Popped up and disappeared pretty quickly. Why? Take a real look at nurses in general...

If you have Medicare Advantage check out the Silver Sneaker program. It’s a gym program for seniors.

I go to Silver Sneaker classes all week. In a few hours I’ll go to my Arthritis H2O class. It’s a swim class for seniors whether you have arthritis or not. On Tuesday I go to Chair Yoga. On Wednesday I’m back at the swim class. Thursday is Chair Fitness class and on Friday is Chair Aerobics.

I’m a 73 y.o. mother of six and realized years ago I needed to keep active to keep healthy. I’ve been on some kind of exercise program for the past 30 years. I retired at 71 and am now enjoying a very busy, active retirement.

It is flat out criminal what she is doing. She is not a therapist. She is encouraging people to be be have a host of health issues, such as diabetes and heart disease. Would one counsel someone with drug or alcohol addiction this way?

Unfortunately due to advances in medicine not really. And the costs of treating the obese are astronomical. When I was last in a visitors waiting room for critical care patients, the size of the family members for patients coming in scared the bejesus out of me. The blubber people have put on at all ages is horrendous and there is no remedy as a whole for this.

My thoughts exactly. Men in general, the world over, are not attracted to fat chicks. Obesity signifies gluttony and a lack of self control and disciple. To blame your personal shortcomings on others is a further sign of mental illness. I can't believe she is actually “counseling” people.

Do you ever wonder how someone of those dimensions is able to clean themselves up after certain bodily functions are performed? It seems like it would be a very difficult task.

I'm probably going to get a ton of replies, some indignant, others appreciative, but whatever...

The US does have a problem with "size-ism". But it is not exactly the way this woman perceives it. First, in the quest to statistically encompass the universe in a single metric, almost all of the measurement tools regarding size and weight have been stripped of any concept of muscle mass. If you tip the scale above a certain number, you get classified as fat. I had an E-5 under me in the Army that was a weight lifter - he was overweight per the Army standard, but taped out at something like eight percent body fat. But, he was still considered overweight.

Second, we as a society are rushing headlong toward the ultimate saccharine philosophy - "positivism". Under this rubric, one must emphasize only the positive, especially about oneself, and neglect or ignore any areas for improvement. Instead of building on the positive foundation, one adorns the foundation to obscure the areas where improvement is needed.

Third, we are increasingly becoming dependent on the opinion of others for our self-image (although the "self-image" conflicts with depending on others, ironically). This woman claims that western civilization is to blame for negative self-image when it comes to obesity. There is a grain of truth in that. But, that grain of truth is overshadowed by the plethora of medical problems brought on by carrying a lot of extra fat.

Each and every person has a very personalized range of conditions that are optimal for that person, including weight. For many of us, myself included, we are over that optimal range. The degree to which we suffer from that exceedance is key to deciding to get closer to the range - removing the incentives to do so is a grave disservice to the individual being counseled.

Sorry for the rant.

Rashatwar said curing anti-fatness would mean dismantling society’s foundation: “I love to talk about undoing Western civilization because it’s just so romantic to me.”

you will still die young because extreme obesity is unhealthy. You can evade reality and rationalize bad behavior, but you can't evade the bad consequences of evading reality and bad behavior.

As a marathon runner when I was younger, I had not problems keeping weight off. Because I trained everyday, burning lots of calories.

But now that I am older, I have to cut back on eating or eat different foods to keep my weight down. Exercise is harder but it's also not the major reason weight is gained. Too many processed food calories is the cause.

I've had both knees replaced and I don't run anymore, but I walk briskly for 45 minutes every morning when I get up. And I work actively on our cattle farm in retirement.

But not changing my diet is what causes weight gain now. Not lack of exercise.

Keeping our weight down as we get older, is a major struggle for many folks, myself included. I exercise daily but I pay more attention to my diet now than my exercise to keep the pounds off.

A lot of us have found that we have to change our diet as our metabolism slows, and as we can no longer do the same things physically that we did when younger. I put on 60 pounds over the course of 5 years, and finally got sick of it. I changed my diet, dropped the weight, and now feel much, much better.
