Broccoli sprout compound may restore brain chemistry imbalance linked to schizophrenia (glutathione)

Researchers say they have characterized a set of chemical imbalances in the brains of people with schizophrenia related to the chemical glutamate. And they figured out how to tweak the level using a compound derived from broccoli sprouts.

The researchers found on average 4% significantly lower levels of the brain chemical glutamate in the anterior cingulate cortex region of the brain in people with psychosis compared to healthy people.

Glutamate is known for its role in sending messages between brain cells, and has been linked to depression and schizophrenia, so these findings added to evidence that glutamate levels have a role in schizophrenia.

Additionally, the researchers found a significant reduction of 3% of the chemical glutathione in the brain's anterior cingulate cortex and 8% in the thalamus. Glutathione is made of three smaller molecules, and one of them is glutamate.

"We are thinking of glutathione as glutamate stored in a gas tank," says Thomas Sedlak, M.D., Ph.D. "If you have a bigger gas tank, you have more leeway on how far you can drive, but as soon as you take the gas out of the tank it's burned up quickly. We can think of those with schizophrenia as having a smaller gas tank.

For their study, published in April 2018 in Molecular Neuropsychiatry, the researchers recruited nine healthy volunteers (four women, five men) to take two capsules with 100 micromoles daily of sulforaphane in the form of broccoli sprout extract for seven days.

They found that after seven days, there was about a 30% increase in average levels in the subjects' brains. For example, in the hippocampus, glutathione levels rose an average of 0.27 millimolar from a baseline of 1.1 millimolar after seven days of taking sulforaphane.

Sulforaphane is found in a variety of cruciferous vegetables.

See? This is what happens when one types before reading!! Had I bothered to read further in the article, I would have found the information on sulforaphane. But, I had a freeper moment;)

Duuhh...

Who funded the research? Where was the lab? How long was the study? Were the findings repeated by independent labs? How were the tests controlled?....and blah de blah blah.

After 70 years on the surface of this planet, I've grown skeptical of "important studies" regarding food and diets and health. The give-away is insufficient detail and sweeping conclusions. Sorry if that offends you. Grow your own, get plenty of rest, and exercise....things will be just fine.

“in 7 years our bodies have replaced every living cell and we entirely different than we used to be”

But with the same DNA. New cells same as the old cells.

If it’s of any relevance I’ve got more years on the planet than you, and my health has been greatly improved by applying findings from studies on food and diets and health.

“Who funded the research? Where was the lab? How long was the study? Were the findings repeated by independent labs?”
All are questions worth investigating before discounting a report in knee-jerk fashion, as you did on another thread about the potential health benefits of mushrooms. Skepticism is a useful tool, but the funding source doesn’t automatically invalidate the conclusions of a study. Sorry if that “offends you”.

makes me wonder if people are put on the right antidepressant at all...

They aren't or they wouldn't have to keep going back again and again and never getting better.

Probably nothing came of it. Sadly, like cancer, too many times “they” don’t want to cure the disease. You don’t make $$$$$$$$$$ when the disease is cured.

Blood cells make new ones and die every 3-4 months. Think about that next time your doctor wants to put you one some medication for a high A1C.

“But with the same DNA.”

Not necessarily. Not sure how much, but some of the DNA material is the control info that determines if and when genes express themselves and things happen, how much or little, etc.

I’ve heard that this material can and does change along the way, so to speak, depending on or in response to(?) life conditions along the way.

A learning system? Could be, I don’t know. But by what we used to know, I think we used to call this material “junk DNA”. Doesn’t look like junk now and who knows what we’ll know tomorrow.

Also, DNA can be damaged and can also be repaired. The autonomous systems that take care of our bodies are truly remarkable... all praise and glory to God, doncha know.

The other problems come from the poisons and such the body can’t get rid of, which accumulates year after year. So, if you can’t excrete it, what do you do with it?

I wonder if that’s what a lipoma might be. Like we encase something radioactive in lead to protect ourselves and then store it far away, perhaps the body encases something nasty in fat and stores it as far away as it can, like a lipoma lump under the skin? I don’t know...

When SSRIs were first made, they didn’t have a clue about neurotransmitter roles. Now they have part of a clue, but nothing will stop the pharma profit priority.

I’m really tiring of the biochemistry experiments we’re apparently encouraging out of desperation due to the failure of the medical establishment to make any tangible discoveries.

True story: I suffered a brain injury myself and suffered nearly 50% loss of cognitive ability. I had all the basics, but it affected my speech, short-term memory and many other factors. The worst was my ability to problem-solve. Math was nearly impossible; even counting change was challenging. I’m a creative person but I realized immediately that I could no longer design and build. It had physical manifestations as well, most particularly in my inability to type more than 20 wpm. I had every test. After seeing the neurologist - who said he could find nothing wrong with me and asked if I’d like a referral to a psychologist, I was obviously in a bad place. Worse, doc said if the symptoms persisted for more than 8 months they’d be permanent.

5 years later I was still compensating (that’s a word anyone who’s never had a brain injury cannot fully understand, right?). I’d endured other health matters (minor) which prompted my attempt to shift my diet into something I’d always considered fringe. I began to investigate the ramifications of systemic inflammation, in particular vascular inflammation.

After removing 3 compounds from my food intake simultaneously, approximately 90 days later it was like someone flipped a switch, or like I woke up after a 5 year nap. The ‘fog’ was GONE. Better, within a year I felt 20 years younger. No joke: I’m in better health than when I was 30.

Thousands of hours of research later I’m now convinced that inflammation is the leading cause of many maladies, some of which are the effects of others (meaning that some conditions are precursors). I also believe that chasing single-point fixes or attempting home alchemy to modify inflammation symptoms without removing the cause of inflammation is only compounding the problem.

I also believe that most doctors don’t earn their paycheck.

Obviously in my case it was just concussion and I’d never suggest that inflammation is the cause of brain injuries such as yours, but my experience is tantalizing, in consideration of the changes.

The doctors said it was impossible. I’m still 100% drug-free.

compensating ...sucks. :)

I believe inflammation is HUGE in brain injuries.

The cascade effect of free radicals goes on for TWENTY YEARS unless stopped by some outside force, like perhaps reducing inflammation or causing less.

But my thalamus and brain stem are permanently damaged and without the wellbutrin lots of fun things are not fun at all because like a parkinson’s patient, my brain cannot produce much dopamine anymore.

Except theirs keeps getting worse!!

Mine has stayed the same. Thank goodness.

I am glad you have done so well and wish you the best.

That is a wonderful set of insights. A relative had a similar issue with a head and neck injury and, sadly, but excitedly, there has been continued improvement in the past year. This is after a decade. Changing eating habits and supplementing with various items (only including supplements with supporting studies), has changed it.

One strange item that helped in the past year was a far infrared heating pad. There are studies supporting the approach, but I’d always considered it in the realm of “pyramid power,” which is to say, it’s not valid.
