Martinis at the Bar. Sinatra on Repeat. The TWA Hotel Sells a Jet-Age Fantasy.
NY Times ^ | July 1, 2019 | Michael Kimmelman

Within the first couple of weeks there were half a dozen marriage proposals. Guys dropping to their knees in the Sunken Lounge and on the cantilevered catwalk — popping the question on the Solari split-flap departure board or in “Connie,” the 1958 TWA Lockheed Constellation Starliner parked outside on the roof of a new underground conference center, the plane’s fuselage converted into a 60’s-era cocktail lounge.

The TWA Hotel now occupies Eero Saarinen’s stupendously restored 1962 TWA Flight Center at John F. Kennedy International Airport, midcentury modernism’s great tribute to sex, adventure and the golden age of air travel. It is attracting the predictable mix of nostalgic baby boomers, design-conscious hipsters and stylish Europeans.

I would love to take a trip through that airport.

The styling looks late ‘60s to me, when the mid-century modern look started to go from clean to garish. I’m going to guess it was built in 1968.

That terminal was opened in 1959.

Yep. When I wear a subdued Panama Jaxx shirt with black jeans I look like a millionaire compared to the schlubbs walking around.

The term “Sunday best” is obsolete, in that, nobody dresses up for church on Sunday anymore.

I know the argument, that it’s better they are in church in torn jeans and tennis shorts than not to be there at all.

I think that the casual trend hitting churches, shows just how much the counter culture of the ‘60s infected every aspect of our culture.

Back in the old day folks used to wear their best Sunday school clothes whenever they flew.

Yes, but back then all air travel was the equivalent of first class, today - including the prices. When price points dropped enough to allow the Greyhound Bus hordes to take wing, they brought their wardrobe traditions with them. :)

If I ever have a need to overnight at JFK, I will definitely stay here. It looks great.

This is so cool! I remember being in this building when it was still an active air terminal.

I'll have to add staying here to my bucket list.

Years ago I advised our children to dress for success because it makes you look like a serious employee and it helps set them apart from the slovenly slackers. Bosses take note of people who look and act sharp. Perception matters.

And it has served them well.

Want to get noticed these days? Just wear some nice, clean clothes. America has taken the ‘dress down’ thing to extremes.

I always wear button down shirt and twill or khaki pants and walking or dress shoes. The panhandlers think I have money.

I just hope there is no Room 800...I did see the ‘accident’! No matter what, the government lied...I was boating in Long Island Sound, and I was listening to chatter on the VHF radio...

I was lucky enough to fly from that terminal too. I flew a lot those days. I flew first class from NYC to Paris and back (TWA 800 and 801, by the way). Was an Ambassador Club member too.

Such a different world.

No worries. I, also, thought that it had a late 1960s vibe to it, until I looked for the opening date for the terminal.

Aww, they don’t have any coin-operated televisions attached to chairs in the lounge like I saw at the Tampa airport in the 80s.

I saw an old ad for Greyhound bus...if you ever see a family in a suit coat (dad and son) and dresses (mom and daughter), you might be in a twilight zone...

You’d have to be crazy to dress to the 9’s now.

Cramped seating, bumping into people, bags, toilets nearly too small for normal humans. Why wear your best, to ruin it? To be utterly uncomfortable while sitting on the tarmac sweltering in the sun because the airline wants to save fuel by not idling the engines, instead running the miserable overworked APU?

Or due to overly safety conscious pilots leaving the seatbelt light on the entire damned flight? Heck, you may wet your pants, hope they aren’t expensive! Next time, I will wear a damned diaper in case the pilot decides we do not need the toilet for 4 hours!

I will start dressing when I own my own G6.
