Not to spoil your summer pool fun, but outbreaks of "crypto," a swimming-related diarrheal illness, are on the rise, according to a new report.

Cryptosporidium causes profuse, watery diarrhea that can last up to three weeks, according to the CDC. The parasite is the leading cause of outbreaks tied to recreational water use, such as swimming in pools and lakes. The organism is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive even in chlorinated water for up to 10 days or more

There was a report about this on the Nashville news this evening. It’s hitting people there.

Things like this make me glad I don’t care a thing about swimming, especially in a pool full of people who aren’t necessarily hygienic. ergh!

So how did Milwaukee kill this thing??

All these horror stories and no solutions are fit to disturb the public and not to solve anything, even when Milwaukee overcame the thing.

I haven’t been in a public pool since around 1984. Lots of time in creeks and streams. Had my own backyard pool, and am now too old or them.

They instituted a better filtration system and switched to ozone instead of chlorine. They also moved the intake pipe in Lake Michigan further away from the sewage and storm drainage pipe.

Thank you, very much. Kids and grands are city pool life guards and swimmers and need to be informed about solutions in any event. Appreciate it.

It’s not a virus. It’s an organism.

I had a five month old German Shepherd puppy get crypto once.

Just getting the diagnosis stumped the vet for months. The obvious guess was giardia. Nope. The pup was tested for everything.

A tech *finally* thought to test for crypto, though it seemed far fetched.

We lived in SoCal back then; but, he was never anywhere near a pool, lake, river, or any public water source.

He tested positive.

The vet doesn’t keep the meds, so I had to get them at a people pharmacy. They aren’t kept in stock there either, it was a special order.

The cost: $150 for five pills. And this was over 15 years ago.

The only possible source I can think of was the mud he has a swell time playing in at a friends’ place when her well pump basically exploded. She has a really unique set up on four acres in Los Angeles. Hmph.

Aw, don’t be sad. I used to have to find them with the help of a microscope. Mostly in spinal fluids...
