When seconds count the police are usually just minutes away.

Be prepared to defend yourself.
The police have no legal obligation to defend you.

Why, because they can’t beam officers to the scene of a crime instantly?
Homeowner should have hung up and shot sooner. Don’t leave an audio record and don’t wait long else 911 will call back and make the phone ring.

You can’t depend on 911; you have to be 911.
You are responsible for your own and your family’s safety and well being; everything else is just being a victim.

Someone breaks into my house you can take seconds to retrieve your gun or seconds to dial 911, what are you going to do?
For me I call 911 for medical emergencies, or to request a hearse to pick up the body of the intruder, or to report a fire.

Police investigate crimes after they’ve happened.

I would be thinking of my defense options while staying quiet so as not to lose the element of surprise when I start shooting. Besides, the cop they send may turn out to be some idiot Somali who will shoot you.

The homeowner is told to unload his gun and put it in a safe place. He is told that when he hears police to go out the west (front) door and let the officers see his hands. He's supposed to disarm himself when there could be another burglar in the house?
Well, as long as the police get to go home safely!

I’d grab my gun, then call 911, like this guy did. When the cops don’t show, take care of yourself. At least this guy has proof it was self defense, which is sometimes needed when you live in liberal states that don’t think law abiding citizens should defend themselves.

Yep. Somebody breaks into our house we both pick up our handguns and shoot them coming down the hall. A natural kill box. Hiding in the closet is a poor idea. I can’t talk on the phone and shoot at the same time either.

The homeowner could have shot the perp much sooner and avoided a lot of destruction in his house. Cleaning up bloodstains is a lot easier than replacing furniture. And probably everything the burglar touched is now sequestered as “evidence” whereas if the guy had been shot on entry only the gun would have been “evidence.” It is Seattle, though, and interesting that the homeowner was not arrested for murder.
