The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Yep. Our day lillies just started blooming this week. We have had a lot of rain here in SE Michigan.
I pulled out a big patch of nasturtium because it’s been there since last spring and gotten rather sorry looking.
It reseeds itself and I also save the extra seeds.
Finally have tomatoes forming! I need to plant a few more starts.
I harvested my itty bitty rusty garlic and it’s curing on the back porch. I planted the rest of the cucumbers in the garlic bed.
Green pole beans are climbing and zucchini is starting to pile up so I guess I’ll bust out the spiralizer and make noodles out of it for spaghetti sauce I canned last week.
The soaker hoses are working out well. The zucchini never wilts but maybe it’s getting too much water now. The bottom leaves are going yellow but the plants look really good so not going to worry.
I look in the little patch and I think “My weeds are growing GREAT!!” (I don’t know what I got down there, LOL.)
(need some more soil so I can transplant my pepper/etc. seeds)
Should be able to go to mid-November (usually unless an early cold hits like last year)
LOL!
This gal’s blog is awesome! Very informative.

There will be NO showing of “Sack Lunch” on this Weekly Gardening thread!!!
:)
Thanks for posting that.
Or maybe it is Septoria leaf spot. Many cloudy days and lack of airflow helped the disease.
I read that Copper Fungicide was the best treatment, and we got some, and I also site-searched FR on it and one of the hits (by doodad) spoke about Septoria leaf spot being a problem.
But in searching I came across quite a 2009 thread, Weekly Roundup - Living On Nothing Edition[Survival Today - an On going Thread #3] . Over 10,000 replies! Was FR more populous then or what?
That’s good. Thanks to Hurricane Michael I have a third of an acre of perennials to restore . . . mostly from seed.
You are not alone. Sotry today on FR:
Watermelon crop behind schedule, Texas growers worry ahead of July 4th 6/29/2019, 1:26:53 PM · by bgill · 36 replies kxan ^ | June 28, 2019 | Wes Rapaport Spring weather has delayed the Texas watermelon harvest, casting doubt on the supply ahead of the Fourth of July holiday. Fields across the state are behind schedule due to weather, meaning peak sales for the summer holiday are in jeopardy statewide, growers say. Gary Collins first started growing watermelons 66 years ago. This season, he said, has been pretty rough. Ground was cold, ground was real cold, Collins said.
Your homepage doesn’t say where you’re located but I (used) to get my jars at Fred’s. Unfortunately our Fred’s has closed. They were about a dollar cheaper per flat there than even Walmart.
If you have an Ace Hardware close by maybe ask the owner/manager about a bulk discount to order them to the store. I’ve had really good luck ordering canning stuff online at ace and shipping it to our local store. Ditto seed starter mix and things like a garden weasel. I’ve bought Ball jars at our Ace before too. Those little 4oz ‘gift’ size jars that are sometimes difficult to find. But, they also had a full stock of every other size as well.
Dinner looks yummy.
We’ll be right over.
Oh, No! That’ll be a lot of work! Maybe you can put out a plea to Freeper Gardeners and we can all send you something from our gardens, if the zones match, or send you some seeds if expense is an issue? I know we’d all be glad to pitch in, so consider it! :)
If it’s any consolation, I have puppies DESTROYING my lovely landscaping across the front of my house! I told Beau that this is the LAST time we’re raising puppies near the house.
Barn Life for the next batch. ;)
Augie? Was it you talking about a Bumper Crop of Cherries last week? This was my Montmorency Cherry in 2014 at my other farm. Loaded, that season!
The Blackcap Raspberries are just about ready to pick and the wild Blackberries won't be far behind. One fun thing about living where we do is that there is so much 'wild food' to eat. Mother Nature will provide!
Does anyone have history with birds loving g your fresh berries too much? I think they have taken a fancy to my newly planted raspberry and blueberry plants.
Is there a preferred method to saving the fruit if they tell their winged cousins and pals about my tiny crop?
Netting?
