Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s choice to be the city’s deputy mayor of public safety is Susan Lee, a senior director at an anti-violence nonprofit who says reducing violence is her mission.
Lee, 51, is the senior director of Safe Chicago Network at Chicago CRED (Creating Real Economic Destiny), a nonprofit where former Obama administration education secretary and Chicago Public Schools chief Arne Duncan is managing partner.
Lee has worked on anti-violence issues across the country, including in Los Angeles, and said her first priority in the new role “is to establish a basic level of safety in all communities in Chicago.”
“It’s a mission for me because I think that it’s a shame that we have gotten to this level in one of the richest countries in the world and we owe it to these communities and the kids who live in these communities to create opportunity,” Lee said. “To get there, we have to have a basic level of safety.”
The Mayor’s Office of Public Safety will “focus on reducing violent crimes, including gang and gun-related violence — while also ensuring that these efforts are paired with investments in social service supports, including access to mental health resources and other services,” the mayor’s office said.
Part of that approach will include partnering with local organizations, including Chicago CRED, the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Civic Consulting Alliance, the mayor’s office said.
Lee starts July 1 and will be paid $165,000 per year, a Lightfoot spokesman said.
The incoming deputy mayor has an economics degree from the University of California at Berkeley as well as a law degree from Boalt Hall, Berkeley’s law school.

I sold my half of a gorgeous condo on the 53rd floor, just off Rush Street & Chestnut overlooking Lake Michigan, to my brother. He’s elated. Quite sure he’ll be able to make a killing on it either renting or selling it. In fact, he’s laughing at me.
That’s fine. I was born and raised in Chicago, like him. When I was just 12 years old, we’d take the L train downtown and walk to the Prudential Building, the tallest building at the time.
We’d see a movie, then take the train back in the afternoon.
Safest city on the planet at the time.
It was hard for me to sell, and give it up, but I HAVE NO DESIRE WHATSOEVER, to return to that city, for any reason.
It’s a toilet, and it will only get worse.
I am quite sure taxes will go up with this new mayor. I’m sure a variety of fees too.
I don’t know about property values. There’s always some filthy rich person willing to plop down big bucks for a scenic view of the City, but at what price?
Life in a big city. Nothing new except PC run amok allowing the criminal elements to rule. In the past at least there was some degree of control by the police.
