Chicago O’Hare Airport Employee Fired After Losing Master Keys To Security
Simple Flying ^ | 22 June 2019 | Jay Singh

An employee at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport was fired after a security mishap. The employee in question lost a set of master keys for O’Hare International Airport’s secure access facilities. In light of this, the employee was relieved from their duties.

According to their investigation, the missing keys unlock perimeter fences and key entry points. Overall, the keys could open around 100 perimeter gates, 150 other gates, and an “unknown amount” of doors, elevators, and washrooms. In terms of airport security, these are some of the first-line defenses against unwanted intrusions and potential malicious acts.

Due to the severity of the incident, the employee in question was terminated. Notably, this is not common practice at the Chicago Department of Aviation. Employees are generally safe from extreme disciplinary action, such as termination.

“...relieved of THEIR duties.”
The gender neutral loophole. It was probably a female.
Everyone makes mistakes, both men, women and ‘other’.

“His first day on the job, he completed too much work too soon; they told him to go watch the airplanes land! “

Makes sense for union-run $hitcago! We can’t have people actually working, because it makes it harder to bring on more slackers to pad the payroll.

What worries me is that one person could cause such chaos. There should be enough granularity of access privileges that if any one person becomes a problem, for whatever reason, things can be resolved quickly and securely.

It doesn’t appear to be the case here.

When I was a flight attendant, back in the early 2000's I was at the Chicago airport and some weirdo exposed himself to me and one of my friends when he approached us trying to eat our lunch. He was caught and our flight was delayed so we could ID him. The airport police told us they were going to put him in a lineup for us to identify him and we laughed hysterically as we told them we couldn't ID him by his face. 😁 So, the police let us Southern girls go, telling us we would be getting a court date in the mail and when we got back to our now delayed flight, the passengers gave us a cheering, standing ovation. My point - this weirdo had a huge round keyring attached to a belt loop, filled with probably 100 keys and we were told that he had keys he wasn't supposed to have of the airport. Just sayin'.

First off, if an airport is concerned enough about security that they must have locked doors and gates, there should never be a master key. Obviously, they aren’t concerned since there are master keys floating around.

O’Hare will hire the lowest bidder and it’ll be their ex-employee’s brother, Achmed.

“Well, there’s a huge task, to re-key everything at O’Hare,”

It will be union work. Only certain people will be allowed to turn the screws clockwise, with a second crew to turn them counterclockwise. The process will take years and cost $millions.

“My guess is that the writer of the article is a twenty-something, who wants to prove that he or she is with it on the gender identity stuff.”

I saw it as more of an effort to avoid ANY possible identification of the person responsible. Based on that, I’m thinking Somalian muslim female.

They should have switched over to card access a long time ago.

I often see 'construction' gates with a guard resting nearby, guessing? They padlock them during off hours and are a temporary workaround?

That said, with 12 sq miles, probably MANY access points with padlocks.
