Though Dick and Mary Beth, who married in 2004 and share three children, were separated for two years at the time he won the Mega Million, a Michigan appeals court ruled that the Pontiac native must pay his ex-wife half the winnings, as their divorce was not yet final.
According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Dick won the $80 million jackpot in July 2013 but took home $38,873,628 after taxes and deductions.
The arbitrator John Mills who was granted the ability to make some decisions in the case by the couple determined that Dicks lottery winnings were part of the marital estate and likely not his first purchased ticket.
Because of this, Mills demanded that $15 million be awarded to Mary Beth, according to court documents. Their divorce was finalized in 2018, the Free Press reports.

Well, I just hope he wasn't the one dragging out the divorce.
There is plenty there for both.
That’s why,the moment you receive the cheque, get out of the country, and transfer your assets into the other country’s banks.
“Dick won the $80 million jackpot in July 2013 but took home $38,873,628 after taxes and deductions.”
one thing I hate about this country, they take away HALF of what you win. Back in Canadastan, you keep EVERYTHING and dont have to declare it.
The courts got it right for a change. God forbid he have to suffer living on 17 million.
Also:
“share three children”
so ultimately it will go to the kids.
Not if you want to see the kids again.
it’s worth it
That alimony payment is one hell of a tax deduction? He may actually come out way ahead of the IRS.
Well why does she deserve any of it?
its worth it

lol. My parents had to have a divorce by jury, because my mom wouldn’t agree to ANYTHING.
My older brother and older sister testified on my dad’s behalf, yet he still got taken to the cleaners.
My mom, God rest her soul, could be quite the actress.
After the decision was announced, she hugged each and every juror.
She got the house and everything in it. My dad got his clothes and dop kit.
For the first few months, he was living in a ratty trailer. On our first visit, my sister and I opened up the refrigerator and he had exactly one jar of peanut butter in there.
He came out alright though. He was a retired Air Force Colonel and ended up marrying a nice lady. God rest his soul, I miss him.
One would assume that Michigan is a joint property state. It’s half hers because she was married to him when he bought the ticket.
Not surprising.
so ultimately it will go to the kids.
The kids will be fortunate if they see a dime of it.
Most lottery winners go broke in a couple years.
*IF* the parents are smart, they'd set up trust accounts for kids which they can't even touch.
The kids get them when they are 30 and hopefully past the stupid years.
Or have a slower disbursement every couple years.
Really? Show me the proof. Really.

Not ALL the 80? Courts are slipping.
He should get her to sign a post-nup agreement.
She’s probably sleeping with the arbitrator.
Were I the lottery winner I’d spend every dime of it fighting the arbitrator’s decision, save for that portion I spent on a private investigator to catch him and the wife in the act.
It’s simply insane to declare something that didn’t even exist until two years after separation to be a joint asset. No obviously it had nothing to do with the marriage at any point when said marriage was intact.
Because females are somehow a minority.
If it helps, just think of it as reparations.
what for? Google it. Man, these ‘show me proof” internet tough guy stuff is a hoot..
