Woman Who Requested Mariah Carey Cake Got Marie Curie Instead

A woman in England who recently celebrated her birthday requested a cake decorated with a picture of her favorite singer, Mariah Carey. However the birthday girl was probably feeling emotions when she saw the result, which was topped not with the singer of "Hero" but with the face of one of science's heroes: Marie Curie, who conducted groundbreaking work on radioactivity.

As a cake topper, the renowned scientist looked "very festive," said writer Harriet Alida Lye, who tweeted a photo of the cake on June 14.

Carey's prowess as a musician is notable: She is a world-renowned recording artist who earned five Grammy Awards since the release of her debut album in 1990.

However, Curie's accomplishments are arguably just as cake-worthy. She discovered the first evidence of radioactivity, a feat that in 1903 earned Curie and her husband Pierre Curie the Nobel Prize in Physics, which was awarded jointly with the French physicist Henri Becquerel.

So evidently, sounding like someone is stepping on a cat isn’t the best path to fame.

I would rather hear Marie Curie sing than Mariah Carey.

"Mari Curie at least did something for the ages.... Not sure who this Carey broad is."

She did Derek Jeter.

I prefer Happy Rhodes. She can sing a smooth D3 up to high Soprano.

No offense, but you must live off the grid far far away.

I think what you mean is “I envy you: you must live off the grid far far away.”

I only have the vaguest idea of who she is, but I have found a place fairly close to far far away that isn’t quite off the grid, and believe me, while there are draw backs, there are advantages. If asked to identify the person in question, I could not—though I would be fairly confident in saying that she was/is a popular singer dating from sometime after 1970. I do know who Marie Curie is, however. I have a 10 year old daughter who probably doesn’t know who either of them are, but if she knows one, it is the scientist, as she met someone named Mariah recently and had no idea that those syllables could be a name.

The cause: verbal order plus British accent.

Just buying a pre-made, special birthday cake seems odd to me. Is it that difficult to bake a cake nowadays? Cupcakes? Cookies?

So is she suing the bakery or was she happy?

Maybe we could all go back to blue and pink roses and gel writing.

Personally I would be honored to receive a Marie Curie cake, she sure did a whole lot more of note than Mariah Carey....

I can see it now. Someone requests a picture of Booker T. Washington and instead gets a picture of George Washington. Howls, whines and moans follow, plus the inevitable lawsuit for racism or some such thing for putting a picture of an evil White male on the cake, bla bla bla.

"Two Nobel Prizes, one in Physics and one in Chemistry is more significant than some mediocre music."

The first Marie received along with her husband, Pierre. She received the second Nobel Prize for her discoveries years after Pierre was killed in a traffic accident (run over by a carriage). One of Marie's daughters, Irène, also received a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, Frédéric Joliot, for discovering artificial radioactivity.

In the 1930s, that led radiochemists around the world in a race to make more radioactive isotopes of various elements, and even create new elements beyond uranium. Out of that came the discovery of uranium fission.

If you read my posts on music threads such as the biweekly Thursday evening and weekly Friday evening Freeper Canteen thread, you would understand why I might not be all that familiar with Mariah Carey.

Against them both, let me introduce Ruth Graves Wakefield, whose birthday was yesterday.

She invented the chocolate chip cookie.
