Sleepless nights linked to high blood pressure
Medical XPress ^ | June 4, 2019 | University of Arizona

A bad night's sleep may result in a spike in blood pressure that night and the following day, according to new research led by the University of Arizona.

The study offers one possible explanation for why sleep problems have been shown to increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and even death from cardiovascular disease.

Overall, those who had lower sleep efficiency showed an increase in blood pressure during that restless night. They also had higher systolic blood pressure—the top number in a patient's blood pressure reading—the next day.

"Blood pressure is one of the best predictors of cardiovascular health," said lead study author Caroline Doyle, a graduate student in the UA Department of Psychology. "There is a lot of literature out there that shows sleep has some kind of impact on mortality and on cardiovascular disease, which is the No. 1 killer of people in the country. We wanted to see if we could try to get a piece of that story—how sleep might be impacting disease through blood pressure."

The study reinforces just how important a good night's sleep can be. It's not just the amount of time you spend in bed, but the quality of sleep you're getting, said study co-author John Ruiz, UA associate professor of psychology.

Improving sleep quality can start with making simple changes and being proactive, Ruiz said.

"Keep the phone in a different room," he suggested. "If your bedroom window faces the east, pull the shades. For anything that's going to cause you to waken, think ahead about what you can do to mitigate those effects."

For those with chronic sleep troubles, Doyle advocates cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, or CBTI, which focuses on making behavioral changes to improve sleep health.

Ironically, I have high BP and my doc prescribes a diuretic to slough off water to help lower the blood pressure.

Even though I take it in the morning, it still gets me up every hour or two all night long, to pee. I can usually fall back to sleep right away but many times not.

So which is it? My blood pressure is high so I take a medication to help lower it which causes me to lose sleep after getting up to pee all night long?

Or is my blood pressure high because I get up all night long to pee and can't get back to a restful sleep?

Inexplicable.

I have taken one 5htp for some time as requested by my integrative medicine doc. and extend it to two as necessary.

It’s not a sleep medicine exactly but does help with relaxing my body to get into REM sleep so I don’t wake up exhausted.

I used to be worn out at bedtime but couldn’t fall asleep and when I finally did, it was only for three, four hours and wake up exhausted.

Sleepless nights are mostly due to stress from life issues that one cannot resolve.

If you are older than your early 40s, your night time waking is likely complicated by prostate enlargement, which does that to us guys.

If you stop taking the diuretic, do you stop getting up at night?

I’m on a diuretic also. I was blaming it for getting up every 2 hours. I’d wake up and really have to pee.
I ended up getting a CPAP for sleep apnea and since the first night using it I almost always sleep straight through 6 to 7 hours.
And yes, the bed is dry in the morning. /grin

CPAP is a miracle for a great many people, and would be that for many others if they just gave it a try or did what they could to reduce the sleep apnea in other ways (reduce weight, etc.).

Good for you!

I’m nearing 70yoa, and have had occasional bouts of chronic insomnia since my teens.

Typically, for me, one sleepless night begets another...and perhaps yet another, because I begin to stress about my sleeplessness and dread the coming night.

So, I think it’s mostly psychological.

But, it’s just an opinion based on personal experience.

Yes, and it showed Very Bad central sleep apnea (brain forgets to tell lungs to breathe while you sleep) and CPAP machine didn’t help with the wake up issues.

I have acquired nystagmus from the head injury and their best guess is too much adrenaline is being released as part of the waking up process.

It DOESNT happen if I get startled awake. Has to be a natural wake up to feel it.

I know someone who has had brain improvements at ten years after major injury.

Keep doing the best you can. You are more than functional, I must say, so don’t let yourself feel down.

If I come across some study that could help, I’ll get it to you.

Thanks for the encouragement.

The first 5 years I wouldn’t wish on anyone except liberals.

I hope the person that you know keeps improving.

All I am left with now is not being able to sleep more than 3 or 4 hours at a time, waking up with the tremors and also with night terrors, which are a result of the injury.

You just keep on fighting like everyone does in life. We ALL have our own crosses.

It was only hard with cognitive issues for the first 5 years. I may forget a word here or there now but that’s it.

VA doc. No financial incentive to sell me a drug. Costs me $7 every few months. And taking the diuretic does lower my blood pressure.

So what was your point again?

I'm 72 and my prostrate was not enlarged on my last physical exam.

If I stop taking the diuretic, my blood pressure goes up.

And I still wake up to pee.

The main point is that drugs are 100% harmful, and the wrong way to address a simple mineral defficiency.

Drugs shorten every life if they are used.

Diuretics destroy your kidneys, and are completely unnecessary. Just use juniper berry tea, it saves lives.

Read your Bible! Doctors are roundly condemned by Yeshua and his prophets. There is a natural cure for every disease.

I've been tested for sleep apnea. Breathing is normal.

I live in Florida and work on my cattle farm. The heat and humidity requires me to drink a lot to keep hydrated. I have to pee every hour or two all day and all night.

It's not my breathing that is the problem. The Spironolactone is. If I stop the diuretic, my BP goes up.

Such is life.
