Weekly Garden Thread - June 15-21, 2019
June 15, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 06/15/2019 5:24:50 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

Our 'Greeneyes' has been FOUND, but she is STILL having computer issues, so I have been asked to keep the Weekly Garden Thread rolling until she returns.

That said, I will be posting once a week, and I will TRY to stick to her schedule of a Friday Night/Saturday Morning Weekly Post, but it depends upon what is going on here at MY farm. (It's Spring; it's BUSY!)

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Here's one of my puppies, Sunshine, behaving herself for a few moments in time. She's about 2 months old and is a Treeing Walker Coon Hound and will grow up to hunt Raccoon and maybe Black Bear; she's feisty enough! I am raising her for a friend, so I'm TRYING not to fall in love.

I should add:
I pick and scrape the peppers clean and soak overnight in salty water. This takes down some of the heat...

That zero-turn is a BLESSING!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Amen to that! It took me a week on the tractor-style mower to do all the fields & the area around the house we call the ‘yard’. If I’m out from early morning to evening, I can do the whole place in one day, but I have to be on the mower all day. Now, I do it in two long afternoons .... early morning mowing with the wet grass is not a good thing. Also, The zero is a lot more comfortable - no feet required (keeping pressure on a pedal is tiring when you do it for hours) and no “horsing” a steering wheel trying to turn it around.

We’re keeping the little tractor - it can pull a cart & that’s primarily what I use it for. That poor little thing cut a lot of grass before I got the zero & I’ve now about worn the zero out, but it will work just fine for my relative with the large lawn. This big commercial one will cut even more time off the mowing - can’t wait to use it. Currently, I’m holding my breath using the other zero - will it make it through the mowing this time? Carburetor has been rebuilt twice this spring & we finally just put a new one on. It IS running, but I think it could run better if a “real” mechanic got to working on it. Anyway, the new one has a 36 month warranty so I’ll be “good” for a while!

A nice picture and a cute puppy. She has a quizzical look on her face, like she is saying - What do you want me to do mommy?

For a ‘gal’, I’m pretty handy/mechanical - got my own tool bag and some oft-used tools. I get tools for Christmas presents! Even took on some plumbing in the house this past winter & ‘got ‘er done’ to the absolute amazement of my elderly parents (& saved them a big plumbing bill)!!

My dad is very mechanical & my maternal granny was the equipment fixer (big stuff - tractors, combines) on their farm. If anything broke, granddad was calling for her so I guess I inherited a lot of ‘mechanical/handy’ genes .... it’s a REALLY good thing to have. :-)

Planted more cucumbers and some pinto beans.

Soaker hoses are working well. Don’t know why I didn’t get them years ago.

4x4 raised bed kit arrived yesterday.

Rusty garlic is looking awful. Don’t know if it will bulb and looking forward to yanking it out in favor of something that will hopefully be more of a success.

Zucchini is looking really good but I have to chase it with a q tip so it doesn’t wither up and die as we do have a shortage of bees around here.

Don’t know if the new raised bed will be greens, green beans or watermelon. I guess it depends on whether or not my watermelon plants survive

I have had no success with melons at all.

An occasional pumpkin but no melons.

All your flowers are gorgeous-the iris in particular is breathtaking.

Don’t you just love being able to fix stuff?

And YouTube tutorials are great for what we don’t know how to fix.

I haven’t been able to work due to health but by God I try my best to keep my hard working husband from having to do anything when he finally gets home. I do just about everything around here so the dragonslayer can put his feet up,eat dinner and have a cold one.

Before our first Christmas together, I asked wife what she wanted as a present.
She said “belt sander.”

Thank you. I love iris. They just have such an old fashioned look. I like hollyhocks too but they do not do well at our place.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yes, I do!! The plumbing issue had been languishing for 2 years - found this out after I fixed it. Got on Youtube & found a couple of videos to help me get it done. The other thing I like - phone cameras. Take pics as you take things apart & then you have a guide when you put them back together - works like a charm, especially when you get more complicated like carburetors. :-)

Excellent skills to have! Wish I were a bit more mechanical. I guess I should learn, LOL!
