There was a profile on Letterman in the Rolling Stone in the late 80s or early 90s and it was intended as a puff piece but they couldn't find anyone to say good things about him, just stuff like "Dave's a genius on stage and off stage he's complicated..."

The implication was that he was a raging egomaniacial a-hole in real life. We got to see that for ourselves over the course of his last 15 or so years on the air.
