The night before Kate Nixon and 11 others were murdered by a disgruntled co-worker, the decade-long Virginia Beach city employee talked with her husband about bringing a gun to work for self-defense -- a decision that was taken out of her hands by the city's ban on employees carrying firearms at work, a Nixon family lawyer said.
Now, Nixon's family is calling for an independent investigation into events leading up to the May 31 shooting and what could have been done differently before and during it, particularly given the explicit concerns about shooter DeWayne Craddock.
Kate expressed to her husband concerns about this individual in particular, as well as one other person, Nixon family attorney Kevin Martingayle told WHRV's "HearSay with Cathy Lewis" radio show Monday. In fact, they had a discussion the night before about whether or not she should take a pistol and hide it in her handbag -- and decided not to, ultimately, because there's a policy apparently against having any kind of weapons that are concealed in the building."
The city of Virginia Beach prohibits employees from carrying "any weapon" while working or on city property, unless authorized by a supervisor. The city policy notes: "The prohibition against possession of a weapon applies even if a member has a permit to carry a concealed weapon." . . .

Employee weapons bans are just requirements that the employees be stupid.
Some weapons just require more creativity than others. Using a hard-wired telephone, a chair, a mug, or another human are only the most obvious.
But if you stop someone from killing you, you could get fired. /s

Oh, no doubt in my mind that if the lady had been carrying and somehow gotten the gunman before he got her and after offing a few, the lady would have received some kind of good citizens award THEN gotten fired for bucking policy.
The REAL FUN starts when the family of the shooter that got offed would be able to sue the lady and the city because she was armed against regulations.(sarc??)
I legally carry and the ONLY time I ‘disarm’ myself is if I am entering a place with a detector in it.
When in a jurisdiction with archaic gun laws, I just make sure I do not put myself in a position to get ‘investigated’ and go by the already mentioned:
WE CALL IT CONCEALED CARRY FOR A REASON.
Some of the people I worked with were not polite.
Are you in favor of bringing back dueling?
I am of the opinion that if an enterprise prohibits licensed CCW permit holders from maintaining their weapon on their person, the there is an AUTOMATIC assumption of a duty to protect from harm.
Why would I be okay with that?
Are you okay with disregarding the law?
Seems that there are millions of illegals in this country that do that. You okay with that?
The Virginia Beach city officials are co-conspirators to the murders of those people. Those anti-2nd Amendment VB officials should live with that horror for the rest of their miserable lives.
You do your thing and the rest of us will do what needs doing to protect ourselves. Don’t expect anybody to go out on a limb to protect all the good little ‘law-abiders’. Don’t forget your bag of rocks you can throw at a shooter.
This should be pointed out more. It seemed a mistake when they started with the ‘gun free zones’. It is proving to be so.
They won't you are asking the impossible for these Liberals to have any conscience. They "feel" they are doing right. Unless one of them or them family gets 'offed'.
Really? Without the law, what are we? If you don’t like the law, work to change it.
As for a bag of rocks, you keep them. I have other means at my disposal.
Listen up pal - when the ‘law’ tells me I have to remain defenseless despite credible threats issued by US intel agencies, I’ll change it by doing what I believe is in MY best interest. You’re welcome to do whatever your conscience tells you to do.
Are you okay with disregarding the law?
I dont know about where you live but here all they can ask me to do if they happen to notice that Im carrying a concealed (you might want to look the meaning of that word up btw) weapon is ask me to leave. If I refuse the only law that Im violating is a trespassing ordinance.
But since Im very diligent about properly concealing my personal weapon that situation will not occur.
Unless and until someone who owns the property in question sees it and then follows the legally required sequence of events Im not violating any of the laws of my state.
So, in short, Im fine with my behavior. If it bothers you just let me know. Ive got two available cheeks so your wait time will be negligible.
Enjoy your evening.

I would follow the policy religiously, the sign says no weapons that are concealed in the building, I would assume that also means concealed upon your person inside the building.
Fine; I will wear my 45 Long Colt on a belt holster where GOD and everybody else CAN SEE IT!
Most of the currently ENFORCED LAWS in this country are just designed to turn honest citizens into criminals.
I always have, and always will, just ignore the laws that I believe to be unjust under the BILL OF RIGHTS.
Love me some Lurker!
;-).
