US defends itself after humiliating Thailand at Women's World Cup

Thailand's players were in tears at the full-time whistle after suffering the heaviest defeat in World Cup history at the hands of the US.

There were those on social media who criticized the defending champions for celebrating each goal, but Alex Morgan -- who became only the second American to score five in a World Cup match -- told reporters that "every goal counts."

With the US 3-0 up by halftime, the match was effectively over. With the title holders then proceeding to score four goals in the space of six minutes early after the break, it was a rout by the 56th minute.

But Ellis proceeded to make attacking substitutions, bringing on forwards Mallory Pugh, Carli Lloyd and Christen Press, decisions she defended after the match.

The Thai team is supported by a wealthy patron, the general manager Nualphan Lamsam, who is the chief executive of one of the country's largest insurance companies.

Her family's company sponsors Thailand's fledgling women's league, and players on the national team are also employed by her company.

Yeh, good point. There are approximately two hundred countries +/- in the world depending on the way. If you toss out most of the African, Asian and some east European countries, then the talent pool becomes pretty thin. It takes a lot of money to develop a top-tier world-class team that would be truly World Cup competitive. The Cup Executive Board says they’re starting to do that. But, it will take a butt load of money and resources to make it happen.

Yup, the rules as you’ve described, seem to support the strategy they implemented.

Plus they aren’t in grade school with parents all over watching.

It is a damned shame that the US soccer team treated those beautiful Thai women so callously and then when off to a scissor party.

JK, winning is winning. They could have been a bit more gracious and not celebrated so hard.

I’m not referring to the number of goals. Just the taunting and inability to act decent and civilized.

Exactly on point!

Talk about running out the clock, or putting in the 2d string is nonsense. As you point out, it was necessary under the rules to play a strong game all the way to the end, but there was no need to or benefit in humiliating an obviously weaker opponent.

Those of us who have had ample opportunity to witness misbehavior by Americans overseas sadly understand how such conduct can make an outsized negative and lasting impression. If we are the greatest nation on earth, we should act like it and encourage others to rise to our level.

The classlessness starts at the top; the coach had demonstrated hers long before the Cup, and, of course, the players followed along like good sheep. rapinhoe will gladly accept US dollars for her work, and wear a USA uniform while demonstrating against the US. Only in a twisted liberal’s mind.

And what, give each team a participation trophy and sing Kum ba ya?

Sportsmanship is knowing the game isn’t over until the final whistle is blown. Until then anything can happen or why would they keep track of comebacks. Fight for the lead, keep the lead and make sure your opponent knows you won before the game is over so that the next time they meet, you get into their heads and they are afraid of you. Makes the next game between the two easier to win.

WTF? You’re hoping we lose because we kicked a$$ and let everyone know we kicked a$$?

Did you hope we would lose in Korea or Vietnam because we kicked a$$ in WWII and WWI?

Oh, yes....that ‘in your face’ attitude is catching and it isn’t ‘good’.

The Nationals have taken their ‘celebrations’ to the dugout, with the obligatory(??) high fives on the field.

I still go along with John ‘Diesel’ Riggins when asked why he was ‘so 1940s’ by TOUCHing the ball on the ground in the end zone after a score — ‘I act like I have been there before and hope to go there many times in the future’ (or something along that vein.

The pitcher gets ‘upset’ when the hitter creams one then casually flips the bat and strolls around the bases, taking his time etc.

Playing ‘Devils Advocate’ do you think if the pitcher didn’t strut around behind the mound after a K or gesture to the hitter ‘I gotcha’ the hitters might tone it down?

I doubt they would tone it down, but I do see a ‘short life’ for the BB celebrations INCLUDING the ‘signing oneself’, offering a ‘prayer’ etc be included in the ‘don’t’ column.

They will probably have a time limit on running out a homer and take it away if too much theatrics..(Sarc but who knows what the tyrants will foist upon us)

When Germany beat the host Brazil in World Cup 7-1, that was far more humiliating than the U.S. women beat Thailand 13-0.

I’m rooting against this group led by a leftist america-hating carpet muncher. Won’t watch — too boring and women’s sports generally suck badly with the exception of beach volleyball. Can I get an amen.

I’ve heard this many times from football coaches regarding endzone celebrations... “Act like you’ve been there.” The US Women would do well to heed that advice.

I remember I found myself rooting for Japan when they beat the US in the Final a few World Cups ago.

You are correct. Just qualifying for the World Cup is quite an accomplishment; and the U.S. is the heavy favorite to win it all.

I don’t think the US will win. England is pretty good. I think the Germans are good as well.

Are they supposed to stop playing? Is this softball?

I would prefer they don’t stop until the end of the tournament.

They celebrated, but from what I heard they did not “taunt.” There is a big difference.
