Animals Cat advocates say declawing is ‘brutal.’ New York lawmakers just voted to ban the procedure.

(Hans Pennink/AP) By Michael Brice-Saddler June 4 New York is one signature away from becoming the first state in the country to ban cat declawing, a practice advocates say serves no benefit to felines and is done typically out of convenience.
The bill, which passed by a wide margin Tuesday in the state’s majority-Democrat Assembly and Senate, would impose a $1,000 fine on veterinarians who perform the procedure for nonmedical purposes. That means pet owners in the state would no longer be able to have their cats declawed for cosmetic, aesthetic and other ostensible reasons.
One of several lawmakers to champion the measure, Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (D-Manhattan) was visibly jubilant after the vote. She has previously rallied against declawing and condemned its invasive nature in a statement: “It is not like getting a mani/pedi,” she said. “It’s a brutal surgical procedure.”

Yet they support murdering, dismembering and selling the bloody parts of babies.
They have no problem “declawing” people by not allowing them to have carry guns.

Wow. The fact that they can pass a law like this with a straight face, while hysterically maintaining society’s right to de-life infants... well... what can anyone say? It’s beyond the beyond.
It’s just a mass of cells, not a full cat.
Declawing is cruelty. I knew this when I was 5 years old. It shouldn’t be done.
I wonder if they are as outraged by th muzzled practice of female genital mutilation?

I agree. The hypocrisy is unbelievable. A 7month along fetus can handle torturous death but never declaw a cat.

They’re against disarming cats but not humans.
I agree with you. Just because they condone other cruel practices is not justification for being cruel to animals.
If you don’t like claws, you might not like cats. They go together.
But, that said, surely there are some other problems that more urgently require a solution.
I worked with a young guy who told me in no uncertain terms that he wasn’t going to have his new cat declawed. “I just can’t do a thing like that to a poor animal,” he told me. He paused a minute and then added, “Of course I had his f**king nuts cut off.”
You can’t de-claw a cat, but you can chop up a baby in New Yawk.....................
