A motorcycle rider in Florida was killed on Sunday when he was struck by lightning while driving on Interstate 95. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported that the motorcyclist from Charlotte, North Carolina suffered the fatal crash after lightning struck his helmet.

Florida Highway Patrol Capt. Kim Montes told reporters that a Virginia State Police trooper had happened to see the accident while on vacation. He told law enforcement that he saw a bolt of lightning strike the man's helmet a second before the deadly crash.

The 45-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:11 p.m. on Sunday. His name has not been released to the public. Montes confirmed there were scorch marks left on the helmet which indicated it had been hit by lightning.

A Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson is cited as describing the helmet as shattered.

I recall reading that the path for the lightning rises up and the lightning then follows it.

I was hit by a (small) tornado in Floridah...right after turn north on State Road 7 at Oakland Park Blvd. Jumped off the bike just as it went into a spin and sheared off the mirror, left turn signal, and gear shift lever. Two Rastafarians picked me and the bike off the street, planted me back on it and i rode the ten miles home in driving rain (and hail) without leaving second gear.

I went back to the intersection the next day and tried to find the Rastamen to thank them, but nobody knew who they were.

But I have NEVER been hit by lightening.

BTW, I still ride the same bike, 20 years later.

I had thought that the rubber on the tires keep the bike from being grounded, making a lightning strike unlikely while in motion.

When dealing with lightning range voltages, everything is grounded. Rubber contains carbon, and with those voltages, it will blow right through it.

For what it's worth, i've seen a dump truck lift it's bed under some high line wires until it touched them. All the tires exploded, and here we are only talking about 12 kilovolts.

Golly, that could diminish the reputation of motorcycles for safe riding.

Coral Bay is right on the border with Coral Springs. Margate Zip Code, but kids could walk to Coral Springs High School.

999 zero-lot line CBS single houses...that’s lots of kids!

When I left in 2015, I had my car, my motorcycle, my dog, and my guitar.

I think I may have a song in there somewhere.

With a car it is the Faraday Cage effect going on that protects the people inside.

That video is obviously not from Russia. I’ll watch the car crash videos from Russia. A car can flip over and skid 4 feet behind a person and those Russians barely even react.

And then they proceed to calmly continue down the sidewalk without a glance at the wrecked car or the people within.

An upward moving streamer of charge, usually positive, rises from a grounded object toward negative polarity step-leaders extending from a charge concentration within a cloud. The streamers are rarely perceived or caught on camera.

Insulation can be jumped if the voltage potential across it is high enough. That’s why high tension lines have such big insulators. And, the lightning potential is millions of volts. Also, if the tires are damp, the insulating value is greatly reduced.
