The very first horse race I ever went to was with a girlfriend at the time, her father & his girlfriend. He asked me if I was going to bet, I said no. He said you've got to bet on the big exacta (I believe that was what it was called). So I picked 2 horses: 1 to win and 1 to come in 2nd. My picks came in as picked. Her father said now you get to play the 2nd half of the big exacta. Pick the 1st & 2nd place horses in this race. So okay, this time I studied all the horses a lot more than the random pick in the 1st race, not really knowing what to look for in a horse. 8>)

Well the 2 horses I picked had a photo finish, meaning they would have to examine the photo to determine which horse won & which one came in second.

Let's just say I would have won like 5 thousand, for a 2.00 bet, had the photo gone my way. 8>)

My girlfriend leaned over and hit me, LOL. Like I was gonna share it with her!!!

You could have done something called (IIRC) an exacta box. For example, place a bet that horse 15 will win with horse 7 second AND a bet that horse 7 will win with horse 15 second. It costs twice the exacta but you'll never miss out by having your horses come in 2-1, thereby losing a big payout.

On a nice day, at a pretty track, it's fun for a few hours.
