Deaf woman concerned over note from Portland drive-thru

PORTLAND, Maine — When Vera Mauro comes to a drive-thru, she’ll usually keep driving toward the window. Mauro is deaf and uses American Sign Language to communicate. She typically writes her order down on paper, but on Tuesday, her usual pattern didn’t work when she stopped for a drink at a Portland Dunkin'.

“The woman didn't exactly see me, so I used the horn. Yet she ignored, texted on her phone and made another person's drink, and when she came back, I held up the order on the paper. She saw that I had it, gave me an attitude,” said Mauro.

In return, she received a note asking her to start using the inside storefront and to not use the drive-thru.

Mauro explained that she found the note to be offensive and tried to reach out to the store about it several times. The location manager responded to her in an email, offering a gift card and asking her to remove her post from Facebook.

“That was not enough,” said Mauro

Things can and do happen fast. I had normal hearing for most of my life until several years ago when I suffered from what one specialist called sudden hearing loss. My hearing went in a matter of days. Another specialist told me to learn how to read lips. Others told me to get hearing aids. I spent 7 grand on a set of the most powerful aids made and felt like a fool who wasted his money as the mainly made the noise I heard loader. All sound was just noise, very distorted noise.

A super specialist told me I would go completely deaf within several years and I was a candidate for cochlear implants. People don't seem to understand how it is to be hearing impaired. I learned how to read lips on my own, but when people turn away and keep talking it's impossible.

I had one side implanted last June and the hardware hooked up in July. Hearing is better, but leaves a lot to be desired. Music is impossible to listen to. Voice is much much better, and not at all robotic as they said it would be. I can hear voice much like it was and can pick up the nuances, although it is somewhat distorted and at times it's like hearing through frayed wires. I'm not thrilled about the metal plate in my scull and wire in my head , nor the slight loss of balance it left me with. I can remove it and be deaf.

As for the woman going to the drive through, she sound like she is self centered and the world should revolve around her. I do not use drive through, never have. I like to go in and see people face to face, much easier to communicate.

TO MAKE PEOPLE SPEAK UP WITHOUT MAKING THEM FEEL STUPID OR UNCOMFORTABLE. THIS ALSO KEEPS PEOPLE FROM THINKING I’M RUDE OR STUPID BECAUSE I HAVE TO ASK THEM TO KEEP REPEATING THEMSELVES. LIKE I SAID DEAF PEOPLE DON’T HAVE A WHITE CANE. PEOPLE DON’T JUST OFFER A HELPING HAND TO YOUR DISABILITY ‘CAUSE THEY HAVE NO IDEA YOU CANNOT HEAR. UNTIL YOU TELL THEM.
-rant off - nothing personal-

You don’t have a hearing problem, do you?

You would be amazed at how often people - when asked to “say again” - will repeat what they just said at a much lower volume. It’s like they think they said something wrong to you and are not sure if you are gonna get angry with them. People will think you are challenging them - “say what sucka?”. So you let ‘em know right away by saying something like “I’m sorry but I don’t hear too well. Could you please repeat that for me?”.

The one that frustrates me the most is when someone thinks they can tell you something when they are walking away from you.

The thing that scares me the most is that I cannot hear you when you are right behind me.

So, I went to the local, brand spanking new Dunkin’ yesterday. It’s paired with a Baskin Robins in a teeny tiny shop. I’ve seen bigger shoe boxes.

No accommodations for any disability. Drive through was talk to the box ordering only. Inside, there was no self service kiosk.

Like I said, this is a small operation. Only 8 parking spots.

But, they do have 1 handicapped spot.
