There is a lot of debate these days about whether the United States owes its African-American citizens reparations for slavery. It does. But there is a far bigger bill that the United States and Europe have run up: what they owe to other countries for their colonial adventures, for the wars they imposed on them, for the inequality they have built into the world order, for the excess carbon they have dumped into the atmosphere.
The creditor countries arent seriously suggesting that the West send sacks of gold bullion every year to India or Nigeria. Their people are asking for fairness: for the borders of the rich countries to be opened to goods and people, to Indian textiles as well as Nigerian doctors. In seeking to move, they are asking for immigration as reparations.

“The West” - Why is the west singled out? Wars have been going on forever.
Answer to why the west was singled out: prejudice.
Before the modern era, the law of conquest ruled everywhere. Whether Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun, Shaka Zulu, Hannibal, Xerxes, or Alexander the Great.
As to the U.S., we generally acquired Indian lands by treaty; and, have reconsidered certain of them in order to rectify injustices.
Of course, the author doesn’t recognize this.
With regard to U.S. acquisitions of territory from Mexico prior to or after the Mexican-American War, these were (A) annexation of the Republic of Texas (which had seceded from Mexico), (B) reconciling the border between Texas and Mexico, (C) annexation of the Mexican states of New Mexico and California (which places seceded from Mexico during the war), (D) we paid Mexico for these territories (when usually the winner demands payment from the loser), (E) we recognized the private property, contracts and local governments of these places, and (F) we purchased the most southern part of the present state of Arizona. These are, maybe, complicated, but cannot be equated with the law of conquest.
But, the New York Times hates America so much, they refuse to acknowledge our role in ending the law of conquest.
The territories we gained from Spain, Germany, Austro-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Germany (again), Italy, and Japan after the Spanish-American War, WWI and WWII. Namely, none.
But, the New York Times calls us imperialists. To lie means that you deliberately misrepresent the truth. They aren’t smart enough to lie. They’re just fake.
But it didn't take in many places. India and South Korea are examples of where it did take without the local population being obliterated. Western civilization imposed its values and accomplishments in other places while they remained. When the colonizers leave, the native population doesn't have the drive and/or DNA to maintain those structures.
Then most of the west made the mistake they're still making. Letting people who can't or won't maintain Western civilization in their homelands is polluting our civilization to extinction.
Yes, NYT- the USA should dissolve itself and parcel out all its assets to the third world countries we have so badly abused. Without all that abuse many peoples would be living happily short and scrabble lives in an essentially stoneage milieu. Most of the present citizens of those countries would not be alive to claim reparations.
Curious in that from his last name this fellow would
appear to be a native of India.
A country we have NEVER invaded.
There remains one tried and true method of ensuring foreigners respect our borders, and the time fast approaches when the American people, if not our elected “representatives” may have to resort to it...
Another reason to rejoice we have the 2nd Amendment...It ensures we retain the ability to enforce the other 9 if it comes to that...
There is a reason those other cultures were sacked. They didn’t protect their borders. Any sane self preserving culture will protect its borders. And we should protect ours.
Everything else in this POS article is missing the history lesson.
“But there is a far bigger bill that the United States and Europe have run up: what they owe to other countries for their colonial adventures...”
Yeah, go tell that to Europe. The United States was not a colonizer, we were a colony too.
So, we can all tell the writer one thing....the next time there is a natural disaster, famine, or any other horrific, mass casualty event, neither the USNS Mercy or USNS Comfort will show up off the coast of wherever the even took place and assist...FOR FREE. No members of the USMC, US Army, or US Air Force will help in any way shape or form.
We will instead, watch as the location turns to one of devastation, where the US could lend a very helpful hand, to one of desperation as famine and disease set in and claim the lives of even more people.
But, of course, those folks can always wait on the other hospital ships from China and Russia. You know, the ones that are always willing to lend a helping hand.
Not so. Some are Nigerian Princes.
1. They’re not asking. They’re demanding. There’s a difference.
2. The answer is still no.
Can’t really argue with that reasoning, except to point out that if the Injuns had a bigger defense budget they’d still have this continent.
Illegal migration IS coloniaism!
What does India and Nigeria have to do with the US ?
LOL!!!
Notice no mention of Arab colonialism. I wonder why
I think Ill re-watch Zulu tonight and the company of the 24th Regiment of Foot in action fiercely defending their outpost border from Zulus on the frontier of Natal.
I need a pick me up.
No!
That's the NYT's idea of a discussion, all right. I'll chime in with a reasoned response: NO.
The other difference is that is how countries were started, land acquired by conquest, trade, purchase. Exactly how we got this country. We did build this country, made it into something special and do have borders and laws.
There is no one alive today that took the land, and no one alive that lost their land in any of the building of this nation.
If the socialists are determined to give reparations for past actions or return land to previous holders- then they need to show by example and give their property first.
Just now coming across the wire, per the LA Times:
Trump has announced he will hit Mexico with tariffs.
