Wendy’s has a commercial where a group of stereotypical Italian Americans crowd around an idealized white person and act crudely and threateningly towards him. They eat like slobs, eating spaghetti and meatballs, acting suspiciously of him, and generally make buffoons of themselves. They wear gold chains, have a darker complexion than the white man, and have very ethnic features such as black hair and big noses. Most obviously, the premise is that they are all mobsters and that the white man is there to defeat their evil. At the end of the commercial, two very non-Italian looking federal agents are shown.
This commercial was about a parmesan Caesar salad, by the way. The commercial took Italian food, culturally appropriated it, weaponized it, and attacked Italian Americans with it. The media is not covering this outrageous commercial. In fact, there is a civil rights group on Facebook that gets attacked, both by Italians and non-Italians, in very hateful language, just for pointing these kinds of issues out to the general public. Facebook, quick to ban right-wing haters, seems to be fine with the Italophobia...

That's because there's a big Italian Market there. Many outside of Philly don't know that expression, but I did hear it in the Spike Lee film about a New York pizzaria, Do the Right Thing.
"Moolinyan" is Sicilian slang for eggplant, also shortened in its plural form to "the moolies." It was a way for Italians to talk smack about black people without using the n-word. I explained this to an upper-class friend of mine from Naples, Italy, who had never heard of the expression. It must have emerged from the early Italian immigrant vegetable vendors in New York/Philly's Little Italys.
(The actual word for eggplant in standard Italian is melanzane = mel ahn ZAH neh.)

Jewbacca, you may be confusing the city of Rome with the entire Roman Empire. I would believe it about Rome and Venice, as cosmopolitan centers of trade; but not the entire Empire; unless, as "a strike" requested, you have a valid citation.

There was no such a thing as ITALY nor ITALIANS during the Ancient Roman Empire, nor was there such a thing for long after it fell. OTOH, in modern vernacular, there IS an Italy and Italians and so now, in the present, those who lived there long ago are called ITALIANS!
When Julius Caesar conquered France, THERE WAS NO FRANCE! Caesar called it GAUL and that area was populated by Germanic tribes; one of them being the Franks!
Picts lived in what is now Scotland, but when talking about Hadrian's Wall or other such things, we now say that these things and/or events took place in what is Scotland!
Italy was always several distinct regions— "The Three Kingdoms" of what would become today's geographical Italy did not unite until the early 19th century.
