Solo: A Star Wars Story mustered $393M at the global box office off an estimated $275M budget. Released last May, the film arrived only six months after The Last Jedi. Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker, due for a December release this year, will be the fifth Star Wars universe film released since 2015.

That's too many Star Wars movies in a short time. They are competing with themselves. The original classic trilogy films were released 3 years apart. In the meantime, there were imitator space operas being released to try to capitalize on the Star Wars phenomenon.

Same was true of the James Bond films. When Bondmania was at its zenith, there were all kinds of imitative (and inferior) spy movies and TV shows being made, but the Bond films themselves were always more popular than the weaker imitations. The Star Wars people are making their own weaker imitations and diluting the cachet of the Star Wars name.
