Hackers May Soon Be Able to Tell What You’re Typing—Just By Hearing You Type
WSJ ^ | June 2019 | Matthew Kassel

One recent study, one of the latest demonstrations of hacking that exploits acoustics, found that the microphones in Android devices can be used to pick up the vibrations that are produced when you use the virtual keyboard on your phone or tablet. The sound waves that are recorded can then be interpreted to discern where on the screen you tapped and which keys you struck.

... For example, in 10 attempts, the researchers, using a machine-learning algorithm that classified each vibration, cracked seven out of 27 passwords on a smartphone and 19 out of 27 passwords on a tablet.

...the University of Pennsylvania looked at how a smartphone’s accelerometer—which is used, for instance, to measure steps—can be repurposed by hackers to collect screen vibrations that can then be used to infer PINs and passwords.

...When a tap is made on the phone screen, the sound wave travels through the air as well as the screen. Depending on the starting point for the wave, it will be heard first by one or the other built-in microphones

Nothing new.

I worked in a building with a Project Tempest site (early 1980's).

I had nothing to do with it, but my pals gave me a tour. A large Faraday cage, hanging on sprung damper isolation. Lined with copper sheets, first a typical looking office door, then a door like on a safe!!!, then a copper door.

While much of TEMPEST is about leaking electromagnetic emanations, it also encompasses sounds and mechanical vibrations.[5] For example, it is possible to log a user's keystrokes using the motion sensor inside smartphones.[7] http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/post_article

Back in the day, we were told that the different keystrokes on an IBM Selectric could be detected over the power lines feeding that office.

I recently got a razer keyboard. You can set different light colors and effects like responding to music played on the computer. Especially good for gaming when you can set the colors you like and even make the flash, cycle colors, etc.

Never not having a light keyboard again.

Are the keys illuminated such that in a dark room, you can see which key is which?

If someone is hearing my keystrokes, they’re in my house and I have bigger problems than computer ones.

Perhaps it was the amount of energy needed to move the element (ball)? to the correct character.

In unrelated news, yesterday I saw a guy wearing a T-shirt that said “My other computer is YOUR computer”. I thought it was funny but I powered off my devices.

Yes, exactly. Which is nice. You can set the color and brightness. Of all the keys or including different colors for single keys.

Solves the problem of the letters eventually rubbing off too.

Lying headline. NO, they will not be able to do this JUST by hearing you type. That is a lie, and deliberate.

I’m sick of headlines that lie to get you to read the article, which contradicts the headline, and they hope we are too stupid to notice. Doesn’t work with me.

I’m sick of headlines that lie to get you to read the article,

The function of a headline is to attract you, in a few words.

If the article, fails your criteria, no need to increase your blood pressure, simply skip on to the next.

If you have the time, please post a concise headline for this article, that meets your standard.

Hmmm...something seems to be placing extraneous commas in your text.

Maybe they're listening now.
