They knew something was going on in their body and were able to get to the hospital, Michelles sister-in-law Tracey Calanog told local TV station KVUE.
Friends said the Air Force veteran and his wife loved to travel and tried to get away on annual trips with just each other leaving behind their young son, 2, Davids daughter from a previous relationship, and their dog, Zooey.
According to Calanog, Michelle died first, then David, before he could be airlifted to Australia for treatment. An investigation into the cause of their deaths is ongoing, but a recent World Health Organization alert warns of a deadly influenza strain, including in Fiji where it is particularly affecting young adults.

That is really really scary.
There is also a story about another couple who passed while on vacation in the Dominican Republic.

The 1918 “Spanish” flu pandemic also killed mostly young adults. That pandemic was one of the worst in all of human history, but is nearly forgotten now. Woodrow Wilson severely mishandled the epidemic because of his misadventure in getting us involved in what was a European war.
I meant to say this in yesterday’s thread (about the other couple), but didn’t.
There are a lot of (ahem) mature people on FR. This bug that’s going around is a killer. Given the hype and hysteria we’ve seen over the last several years for other things (SARS, bird flu, etc), I’m surprised (or maybe not) that we’re not hearing the same hype over this.
But seriously. Don’t mess with this stuff. It will kill you, and even if it doesn’t, you will take months to recover. I’ve lost a family member to this, and nearly lost a couple of older friends, and a few co-workers.
One of those friends still hasn’t fully recovered, and probably never will.
Do not go swimming.
Too many unknown factors at work. I don’t care if it is a ocean, Lake, spring, pond, or a chlorine filled swimming pool.
It is a death trap.
A very good explanation of the “Spanish” flu can be found here:

The group that produced this is also doing a YouTube week-by-week history of WWII. Their latest is for the week of June 1, 1940. Indie Nidell, the narrator also did a week-by-week history of the Great War which ended in Nov. 2018
And both were about to return home.
mark to watch
should have eaten at dave lister’s green-hat hotdog stand...he would give them some wet look knitwear
That’s true. Flu is typically most dangerous to the very young, the very old, and people with chronic illnesses.
The 1918 pandemic was different. It affected mostly young, healthy people. I watched a program about it not long ago. There were stories of a young person going out to work one day, and that same person’s body being carried out the next day.
My maternal grandparents lost one of their children at 18 months old. Her death certificate states that she died from pneumonia, as a complication of the flu. I believe my grandfather also had a brother who died, a young man with a family.

Dont mess with this stuff
Very sorry about your loss, had one last week myself. Could you possibly fill us in on what this bug and this stuff is, in terms of viral, bacterial, or other identification, so we might be more knowledgeable about this serious threat in our midst?
I want to say it’s “the flu”, but it’s like it’s no ordinary flu. People I know who have gotten it have progressed to pneumonia, or bronchitis and generally been messed up for months.
There’s a fellow at the office who’s been coughing miserably since Christmas.
Basically, if you come down with a respiratory bug, take it seriously.
I read that the first known cases of the 1918 epidemic were in Kansas, of all places.
