Sephora to briefly close all US stores for diversity training after racial incident

Cosmetics retail chain Sephora will reportedly close all of its brick-and-mortar U.S. stores, distribution centers and corporate offices Wednesday for a company-wide diversity training program.

The closures come after R&B music artist SZA, who is black, said in April she was racially profiled by employees at a Sephora store in Southern California, according to a Reuters report.

In a post on Twitter about the incident, SZA said a Sephora employee she identified as “Sandy” called security to watch her and make sure she was not stealing.

Sephora spokesperson Emily Shapiro told Reuters that the company-wide closures of Sephora stores is not in “response to any one event.”

In addition to the company’s “inclusivity workshops” scheduled for Wednesday, Sephora is rolling out a marketing campaign called “We Belong to Something Beautiful” aimed at promoting diversity.

SZA reportedly used to work at Sephora in the skin-care department before her successful music career took off.

Dear SZA,

If you want to fight profiling, one way to do it is to use the soapbox you have and start sending a strong message to the AA community that theft, gang-banging, and unlawfulness of any kind needs to stop. Send the message that it hurts the whole community, and contributes to people being unfairly labelled.

That would be sensible, and helpful, and would be a very positive message to the innocent children who are born into misfortune. Instead, you degrade yourself and the beauty and power of music to sing things like this:

The artist alleged she was discriminated in some way.

Did Sephora first conduct an internal investigation and determine if the allegation was true.

Or, is it operating on the currently in vogue principle of “guilty until proven innocent”, in which without finding out what the facts are it assumes it must first do some sort of public penance.

What is most shameful of all are the assumptions of the executives of Sephora. Shameful because they are the ones presuming all their employees are guilty, without any evidence, but just one lone, so far unproven, mere allegation.
