What if the way the culture directs us to think about our own biological origins is based on a vast, highly influential myth? The myth is materialism. It’s the idea that only material stuff actually exists, while what we thought are immaterial or spiritual realities — the mind, free will, the soul — aren’t real at all but are just fobbed off on us by the brain. The culture that propagates the myth works through the media, through popular science spokesmen like Neil deGrasse Tyson and Richard Dawkins, through education that takes the form of indoctrination, and with the insistent endorsement of more than a few genuine scientists who, like so many in the public, have swallowed the materialist Kool-Aid. They’ve convinced millions of people that reality goes no further than what we can see and touch. If true, that would mean that the things we care about most, including love, passion, meaning, a sense of right and wrong, and so much else, are illusions. Unfortunately, a great many people believe that.
One of the ironies of this way of thinking is that if “science proves” that only brains not minds are real, then no minds do science. That would mean there are no scientists, and no science. Besides being spiritually toxic, a “scientific” idea like that is fake science.

This is the same concept that is the foundation of the Marxist doctrine of Historical materialism. Marx in the 1840’s-50’s stated the proposition in virtually the same way; the brain exists and from it comes thoughts and feelings, when the body dies so does the brain and that is the end of individual existence. Everything that exists is matter anything else are emanations from matter. This is a old doctrine. Much of liberalism and secularism consists of old and primitive concepts over a century old. Liberalism, which calls itself progressive, is in reality regressive and continues to fight the same battles from over a century ago to produce paradise on earth and has spilled an ocean of blood to force reality into liberalism’s Procrustean philosophical bed.

This is nothing new.
The left’s entire schtick is built on the notion that thoughts are just chemical reactions in the brain triggered by physical stimuli from the material world.
Thus (they’d have us believe) by forcibly controlling the material world, the thoughts of the “masses” can be controlled.
IOW, eliminate social inequality by forcing equal distribution of material “stuff” and the result will be equal happiness for all.

In my lefty college days, I remember well how the Communists berated & browbeat the “masses” about the need to to stamp out every last vestige of “bourgeois morality” and “individualism.”
People are merely physical things, collections of cells. Thus, in order to smash capitalism, we must ruthlessly smash all emotions & emotional attachments to things & people.
Families exert a “pull” toward consevatism— a desire to care more about your family than about the “masses.”
This is bourgeois morality, we were told. The family must be smashed.
Then there’s the systematic oppression of real science that contradicts liberals’ dogma.
