I spoke with an agent who told me the same thing. He told me there’s a way around it though. He said change your address and everything will sail right through. He suggested changing it to my son’s address who lives about a mile from me.

I kind of envy you for being able to go for so long and not know this is the way it’s been since Obamacare went into effect. If you just got laid off go for COBRA.

What are the circumstances of your prior coverage? Did you leave a job from which you may be eligible for COBRA?

Was your other coverage cancelled or withdrawn?

You should provide more info. Have you not had insurance before? Are you adding more coverage? Did you have a "qualifying life event" recently? There are ways to get insurance outside the "open enrollment period" (Nov 1 to Dec 15 last year).

Google "new york buying health insurance outside open enrollment" to find ways. One source found is "How to enroll in health insurance outside of Open Enrollment." Here are the "qualifying life events" (note the last one):

Lost job-based coverage: This applies to you even if you voluntarily left your job or decreased your work hours. It also applies if your job-based coverage does not meet current standards for value and affordability.

Lost coverage through an individual plan: This category includes losing your coverage due to circumstances like moving or no longer being a student. You don’t qualify under this category if you stopped paying premiums, gave up on paperwork, or voluntarily withdrew from your individual plan.

Lost coverage through a family member: You qualify under this category if you had health insurance through a family member’s policy and lost it due to death, divorce, or no longer being a dependent. Or if your family member lost coverage causing you to lose it as well.

Changed your income: An increase in income may mean that you no longer qualify for Medicaid or premium-free Medicare Part A. A decrease could mean that you now qualify for Medicaid, which allows year-round enrollment.

Changed your household size: Have you gotten married, added a child to your household, or had a child move out? You can enroll in a new insurance plan within 60 days of this event.

Changed your citizenship status: If you just became a U.S. citizen or have recently been released from incarceration, you can start over with new insurance.

Encountered exceptional circumstances: The Marketplace recognizes that life events are sometimes hard to categorize. If you experienced one of these types of events you may be eligible to enroll during SEP.

Try a health sharing outfit. It’d s lot cheaper and you can sign up any time. Christian Healthshare is one. Liberty Healthshaare is another. There are several more. Search healthshare. My daughter and her family do this as do more and more of the people I know.

Actually this is one of the capitulations to Republicans to prevent people from waiting until they are sick to buy insurance...

But usually there are exceptions, moving, or major life changes.

So don’t lay this one soley on Democrat’s...

I implore you to leave that awful state. They don’t follow the Constitution, and they impose tyrannical requirements like these on the people.

That’s called the open enrollment period. You can enroll outside of that with a “qualifying event” such as loss of coverage, loss of job or job change, or relocation to a new primary home address. Don’t ask me how I know, I hate this $#!+. You’ll end up on crappy bronze plan w massive deductible because anything else is way too much money, most likely.

Go to Healthcare.gov. and check it out yourself. I thought they had a way of getting health insurance even after the enrollment period.

So, Obamacare covers existing conditions, except you can’t enroll to get coverage. What a scam. There is no free lunch.

I am still livid at the Republican Legislature for not overturning Obamacare when they had both houses.

it’s NOT just NY... but you might want to look into

Medi-Share® - | Christian Healthcare | MediShare.com

Q. What is the deadline to enroll in health insurance coverage in the individual market?

A. In most states, open enrollment began November 1, and ended December 15, with all plans effective January 1. In most states, there is no longer an option to switch to a different plan after the first of the year (state-run exchanges have some flexibility on enrollment schedules, and several are offering longer enrollment periods, described below).

Outside of open enrollment, plan changes and new enrollments are only possible for people who experience a qualifying event. But several state-run exchanges extended their open enrollment deadlines into January, and DC’s has been extended into February. In addition, people in parts of Georgia and Florida that were hit by Hurricane Michael can still enroll in February. Here are the details:
