I collected footage for about 6 months. In that time, I noticed that Treacle vocalized less outside than she did in the house, and that the pitch of the vocalizations was different. She only caught one thing that whole time: a woodmouse. I began wondering if I could do this more scientifically, and follow a larger number of cats, to get a better sense of how they behave when no one is watching.

And what did he find out?
That video is great! They should put it on TV. A Cat Channel reality show. I’d watch!
Had a cat fanatic that used to live next door.
If her cat caught a bird, it was: Just nature taking its course.
She didnt seem think the same thing about natures course whenever my dog chased her cat.
“And what did he find out?”
I watched the video. Quelle surprise!! Cats behave as cats. They stare, prowl, catch bugs, poop, howl, stretch, touch noses with other cats, growl, hiss, and stalk things.
Dude, you had ONE job! And that was to post the headline correctly! :-)
I’ll bet the cats could have made it appear coherently.
But that’s only 6 minutes. We need more time. 24/7 coverage. Unleash the mews!
Bet they could sell commercial time and/or subscriptions easily.

Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly. ~ Charles Addams
So this study began with 16 cats the reseacher encountered in his neighborhood. 16? Feral cats? Approaching any found cat is risky, unless they approach you first, but ‘coming upon’ 16 stray cats in one neighborhood seems like quite a lot. Did he buy some online, maybe?
I actually hope this study DOES NOT inspire a ‘whole lotta’ people to attach cameras to cats and spy on them.
Leave them alone! The best sort of cat to own is one who likes both inside and outside at various times. When that sort of cat leaves the house, they do it to get away from people for a while. They belong to nature, not us.
Some of this may be useful for the sake of science, or learning how to deal with Cat Invasions, but it shouldn’t be overdone just for hobby purposes.
Lee, the article mentions they only used kitties who permitted the cameras.

Thanks. IOW cats do what they do whether they are being watched or not, they don’t care.
That’s pretty much what I concluded. In other words, we can conclude “cats are not quantum particles.”

LOL.........
A: One day in 2014, my cat Treacle brought home a merlin. The falcon was as big as she was, and I wondered whether she had really caught it herselfor if she had just grabbed it after it flew into a window.
Not too keen on hearing a cat possibly killing a Merlin.
I'd like to see more video and I hope they can develop better placement of the cameras to get better video.
That his neighbor is nuts
IMO it is sad how feral cats and outside domestic cats destroy the local bird population.
The birds do not stand a chance.
