Let the alcohol flow.
Thats the decree in the Southeastern Conference. The leagues presidents voted Friday to lift the alcohol ban in their stadiums, with restrictions, passing the decision to the 14 individual schools to set their own alcohol policies. Some, like LSU, are fully onboard and ready to imbibe. Others, like Missouri, say theyre going to study the issue before committing. Still others, like Georgia, have plans for limited alcohol sales to certain ticket holders.
But the bottom line is this: Schools that want to serve liquor at sporting events can now do so, effective Aug. 1. And they are ready to reap the profits.
In a time of massive media-rights revenues pouring into schools, the bump from beer sales isnt likely to be a game-changer for the bottom line. Nor is it likely to dramatically turn the tide of dwindling attendance at games. But many fans will appreciate having the chance to purchase a drink at a game, and all new revenue streams are welcomed by athletic directors.

$25,000 is an expensive Bud Light.

The SEC has dwindling attendance? Really? Sounds like fake news.
Georgia was the only team to sell out every game.
Many of the others were reasonably or very close.
Some were not.
So some of the teams may have dwindling attendance.
So, people aren’t going to college games because they can’t drink there?
With high definition TV, people can have a better experience at home or at a bar.
Many people I know go for the tailgating, (food, drinks, and friends) but only about half buy tickets or go inside. Tickets are expensive, seating not in great locations, so they have big screen TVs set up and have a better view of the game,
In the South many early matchups are not great and the stadiums are like food cookers in terms of heat.

Back in the day when we were still a rational free country there were no prohibitions on alcohol at football games. But if there were then nobody cared and it wasn't enforced. I would pretty much kill a pint flask by the 4th quarter..along with everyone else ..and have some of my life's fondest memories of those times.
How much do you want to bet that there was already alcohol in the club seating and private suites where the richest school donors watch the game?
Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin...
Yep. Bring a flask to the game. Easy to conceal. Purchase a Coke and mix the bourbon and Coke. Or Rum and Coke. Coke is plentiful in SEC stadiums. And a pocket flask of adult beverage is lots more affordable than buying the bourbon at the game. Be prepared.
Exactly. As if the undergrads are going to pay stadium prices for booze. Good luck with that one.
Just turn the venues into man caves. No women allowed. More fun that way. No need for security.
I would not take that bet.
Going to the stadium is probably less attractive for many fans. You can sit at home before your large screen TV and computer(s), and watch and keep track of practically every game in the country.
A few years back, many schools started offering Wifi at their stadiums because they realized the availability of so much information and so many games online was cutting into their attendance.
It’ll be something of a losing battle, but stadium attendance will probably remain at a healthy level for most programs.
Yep.
“I didn’t go to the stadium.
I wanted to SEE the game.”
