SANDERS: WE KNOW THERE WAS 'OUTRAGEOUS CORRUPTION' AT FBI, BUT TRUMP WILL LET BARR DO HIS JOB
Newsweek ^ | 26-05-19 | CHRIS MORRAN

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Sunday defended the objectivity of Attorney General William Barr's probe into the origins of the two-year special counsel's investigation of Russian election interference. She claimed that President Donald Trump will let Barr do his job, in spite of statements appearing to indicate that the president had already reached some conclusions on the matter. Appearing on NBC's Meet the Press Sunday, Sanders was asked by host Chuck Todd about what, exactly, Trump hopes to see as an end result of Barr's investigation into a number of FBI officials and members of the intelligence community who were key to a 2016 decision to look into the possibility that Trump or people in his campaign might have problematic connections to Russia. Todd pointed to a recent tweet from Trump, which read: "My Campaign for President was conclusively spied on. Nothing like this has ever happened in American Politics A really bad situation. TREASON means long jail sentences, and this was TREASON!"

If you see a corpse on the sidewalk with three bullet holes, you can reasonably assume that a murder was committed. You may not know who did it. You may not know how it was done or if somebody gave the order to shoot but you know a murder happened.

In the same way, we know the President’s campaign was spied upon by elements of the FBI (an Executive Office branch of the Department of Justice), the CIA (independent but co-answerable to the Legislative Branch and the Executive Branch) and the NSA (an office of the Department of Defense accountable to the Executive Branch).

Who is the CEO (as it were) of the Executive Branch? President Donald J. Trump. He has every right to call for an examination of these agencies to determine what was the genesis of the spying, who authorized the spying and who performed the spying.

It is perfectly legal for President Trump to name the Attorney General to lead the investigation.

If George W. Bush had authorized wiretaps on candidate Obama back in 2008 for alleged associations with America’s enemies, the Democrats would be outraged and would demand answers to how this brazen attack on democracy happened and what can be done to ensure it doesn’t happen again. But since the candidate here was Trump and the Executive Office was being run by Obama, the ACLU and other watchdogs are totally silent about such abuses. Worse, they scream “outrage” when the victim seeks answers.
