Bear attacks on sheep prompted an emergency meeting between Spain and France Friday, dubbed the “summit of the bear.”
Environmental officials from both European countries met after the autonomous community of Navarre, the area in Spain where the attacks have been reported, requested governments come up with a solution to the problem, according to The Independent.
ince then, however, Claverina has killed eight sheep in Spain during seven different attacks and one in France, according to Spain's El Pais.
Slovenia, which reportedly has more than 500 brown bears, is helping the French National Hunting and Wildlife Agency reintroduce the animals to the Pyrenees, where the population was significantly reduced because of hunting, according to The Independent. Some shepherds in France and Spain have protested that move.

The Pyrenees brown bear population is very small (estimated 15-25 bears) and this is an attempt to reduce inbreeding and prevent extinction. However this individual sow is rapidly becoming a problem bear. They might have to shoot her and replace her with another bear.
Wisconsin had two Black Bear sightings this past week where they were NOT expected - one in Johnson Creek, which runs along I-94 towards Milwaukeestan, and the other up in Eau Claire, two blocks over from our Ladysmith.
The cattle in Andorra should be put on high alert.
This is happening in Navarre. If it were next door in Basque country...I’m guessing the bears would already be dead. But I see your point about bringing in the brown bear to help the existing population of bear. Actually, it’s probably not an unworthy project.
