After Busy Philipps opened up about her abortion on TV, a friend saw an opportunity for a bigger conversation about reproductive rights.
Now, thousands of women have shared their own abortion stories online, many using the hashtag #YouKnowMe. In a phone interview, Ms. Philipps discussed her motivations for speaking out, the response to her story and what comes next.
What led you to talk about abortion on your show?
Part of what I think was so successful in getting people motivated and men on board with the #MeToo movement was hearing from women about their personal stories. Abortion has been, historically speaking, a very taboo subject that women have a hard time talking about publicly, because its such a personal decision.
The anti-abortion people in this country are so vocal, and for all of those reasons I think women have remained silent. And I felt like, well, maybe theres actually value in sharing.
We need to be as loud as they are, but with the truth. Thats the only thing we have. For me it includes people standing up and saying, I am that one in four. It doesnt matter why, when, or how old you were.
You know me, you like me, and I went through this. I think theres something super empowering about being able to shift the narrative and being able to have a ton of people say, Ive also gone through this thing.

"Abortion has been, historically speaking, a very taboo subject that women have a hard time talking about publicly, because its such a personal decision. " And, WHY is that?? Why is it taboo; why is it so hard to talk about abortion; why is is SO personal?? It's just a clump of cells, right? /s Bunch of hypocrites!

This is a plan to get women who otherwise would keep mum about their abortions, to make it a matter of public record. Once that intel is out there, then they can't take it back and it could be used against them once they become pro-life.

They are trying to copy and counter Silent No More Campaign Testimonies but probably few if any positive abortion stories are true. It's a massive propaganda campaign.

"I continued to struggle year after year on the anniversary date of the abortion. I would go into this dark hole of self-hatred and despair. I would become suicidal during this time. I tried getting help through secular counseling, but it didn't help. Our son would come to me and ask and my husband and I if he could have a brother. We would tell him no. And he didn't know that he already had a brother, in Heaven."

That it will not happen speaks volumes about conservative apathy in the midst of a war for this nation’s soul.

Not sure what you mean. If a woman makes it public that she had an abortion --- and she later repents of this terrible decision, and turns pro-life ---- the pro-life movement has always accepted such women with great thanks to God. We respect converts. Many of us understand the pain.
So how could it be used against her? Would she be taunted by the pro-aborts? It doesn't quite make sense.

Post-abortion women who later come to repent their death-dealing action, should swarm into #YouKnowMe and tell their stories.

I’m sure God is not very amused that women would brag about murdering their children. There will be such hell to pay..
To: Morgana
I can hear it now as they praise themselves on their murderous birth control.
“You are so brave” as they slap each other on the back in support careful not to splatter any blood.
To: Morgana
So women are proud of murdering their babies.

Long, long ago while working at a large teaching hospital I saw several stillborn babies...all of them about the size of my thumb. They were all perfectly formed...they couldn't be mistaken for anything but tiny little human beings.
It's an image that's still burned in my memory almost 50 years later.
Given my experience it's damn easy for me to understand why there are certain photos that baby killers, and those who admire them, don't want displayed outside abortion mills.
Perhaps people who aren't afraid of jail might start displaying such photos again.Quietly,of course.
