From a southern drawl to a Boston twang, there is no shortage of accents in the United States of America. But no accent is alike - and neither is their sex appeal. Now a new survey has ranked the sexiest and least sexiest accents in America, revealing whether the country prefers the sounds of Mark Wahlberg or the Jersey Shore cast. While Texas and Boston reigned supreme, the likes of Snooki and The Situation would be sad to learn that New Jersey accents ranked almost dead last in the survey by Big 7 Travel.

I can tell a difference between GA, Mississippi and Louisiana from Tennessee but it’s slight. It’s more of a difference in how they pronounce certain words but I can take it further than that. I can tell a difference between the majority of Tennessee and the deepest part of the mountains of TN, as in moonshine country.
Don’t even get me talking about Southern ghetto. LOL That is like a foreign language.

LOL, go ahead. I’m not a football fan. :-) Besides, I spent the first 14 years of my life in S. Florida (asthma) so I’m neutral.
That hasn’t been the case for 60 years.
The known Boston accent now is quintessentially working class.
I lived in Brooklyn until the age of 8 and then moved to Long Island. I have no idea which accent I have. My husband was born in Queens and grew up on Long Island and, to me, has no accent.
We’ve lived in a suburb south of Boston for 40 years and I’ve come to really dislike the Boston accent. Some of our friends who have lived there all their lives have a strong accent and some have none. Fortunately my kids have an accent from nowhere.
We like our women to sing soprano.

That’s the difference in Appalachian twang and plantation drawl, the two basic Southern accents. The map in post #82 calls them Inland Southern and Lowland Southern (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3749412/posts?page=82#82) and shows where you’re most likely to hear them.
I’ve lived in various parts of the South and am familiar with both. The first sounds like poor hillbillies with a moonshine still and the other sounds like Gone with the Wind style aristocrats or sitting around the courthouse in a seersucker suit. Alabama governor Kay Ivey has one of the thickest plantation/Lowland Southern accents I’ve ever heard.
The two accents are distinctly different but also distinctly Southern and so they can get lumped together by non-Southerners. Like sometimes you’ll see an actor playing a poor TN redneck but sounding like landed old-money MS/AL/GA gentry. The fact that there’s quite a bit of overlap in where they’re spoken (more than the map suggests) probably adds to the confusion. The overlap is because the division isn’t just geographic — it’s also a class thing to some extent. Also the simple fact that the Appalachian twang seems to be kind of infectious and good at spreading itself around. You’ll hear it from the Florida panhandle up into Kentucky and over into Texas.

What a lot of folks don’t realize is that there is a distinct difference between a country accent which basically means someone not taught decent grammar in the South and a true Southern accent and they overlap
A southern accent TN accent is distinct from Texas and is divided between Bristol to Cookeville, Cookeville to the Tennessee River and Tennessee River to Missisissippi River which the latter is more like a Mississippi delta accent ...law oong and draaaawn out
Given the recent northern invasion of the desirable urban southern areas our accents are fading quick from the Piedmont to Nashville to Austin
I prefer Deep South literary accent pleasantries and Minnesota and Southern California beachy tones
I’m fond of Brooklyn Italian speech but I wouldn’t call it pleasing to the ear
In Texas it seemed to me a real southern accent was mostly east Texas and north Dallas....you hear more southern in Dallas than Brentwood TN
The rest of Texas is more a country accent that gets drier as you go further West....Oklahoma ditto same thing
But it really is hard to distinguish purely southern from country sometimes
Like Ben Johnson the actor from Oklahoma had a mix of southern and country tone
Lindsey Graham has a southern accent
The actor Tommy Lee Jones has a Texas country western sounding accent....southern but different

Actors don’t know how to do southern accents. We call it the “Blythe Danner accent” here. She doesn’t know what she’s doing but she always gets cast as a lady southerner. British actors tend to do a better job of it.
The one accent I’m having trouble with is the African-American southern accent. My lovely lawncare guy must be speaking Geechee or something! I have never understood a word he has said but just stand there nodding my head and smiling. Good lawncare guy, though!
I’m between Knoxville and Chattanooga in the foothills of the Smokies. What Southern dialect am I? I don’t have the “country” accent even though I live in a rural area but I know the accent you are talking about. My grandmother and grandmother had that. I don’t like bad grammar regardless of where a person lives but people from my grandparents generation in rural TN normally made it through 8th grade because they spent most of their time being farm hands.
If you saw “The Pacific” Rami Malek, nailed the New Orleans accent.
