The Ghostly Legacy of Hiroshima Has Finally Been Discovered in Physical Form
Science Alert ^ | 05/14/2019 | PETER DOCKRILL

In 2015, retired geologist and marine ecologist Mario Wannier was examining samples of beach sand collected from Japan's Motoujina Peninsula, just 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) south of Hiroshima's hypocentre, or ground zero.

Primarily, Wannier and fellow researcher Marc de Urreiztieta were looking for traces of microscopic organisms called foraminifera in the sediment, but that's not all they found.

These strange glass spherule particles – some of which resemble the kind of glassy debris ejected into the atmosphere during meteorite impacts – are estimated to constitute up to 2.5 percent of all the sand in the beaches around Hiroshima.

Wannier ended up collecting some 10,000 samples of this unusual grit, which were examined by researchers at the Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley, using electron microscopy and X-ray analysis.

Had we had to invade ...
As a leading edge Baby Boomer I probably wouldn't be here. My father was USMC in the Pacific - survived Guam and Boganville - and always said he knew he'd used up all of his luck.

Or "Some 100,000 humans of every age, sex, and condition (if they could put forth such an estimate) wee indiscriminately killed."

Maybe they would hypothesize an asteroid strike, I don't know.

We could have dropped Fat Man or Little Boy on Tokyo.

100,000 casualties? Child’s play

Could have been over a million or more.

They should consider themselves lucky Truman didn’t hold a real grudge.

or maybe they would hypothesize that it ended the war quickly, preventing millions of deaths!

WWII deaths:
85,000,000
Hiroshima deaths:
200,000

The areas were not ‘indiscriminate’ they were strategic military targets intended to cripple the enemy militarily so badly that they surrendered- These ‘innocent civilians’ were working the factories that were making the weapons that were murdering Americans.

Both in Hiroshimo and Nagasaki, there were 1000’s of businesses creating weapons to murder Americans with- We didn’t just ‘indiscriminately drop the bombs hoping to kill as many civilians as we could’ Our government dropped leaflets telling the civilians we were going to do so and to leave the area-

Search “LeMay bombing Leaflet”- here’s a link:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PropagandaPosters/comments/vh9al/a_lemay_bombing_leaflet_from_ww2_which_warned/

in one of the leaflets it said “Bombs have no eyes’ meaning the bomb couldn’t pick and choose who was affected- so they should leave-

IF the bombs were not dropped- warplanes from the US would have had to drop bombs on nearly every city- killing millions-

Indiscriminate? HARDLY

Added- Here’s the link to the facts: Which i forgot in last post- please remove my last post mods- thanks:

also from that debate site:

“The Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was Not Only Justified, it was Legal and Unassailable Under the War Crimes Laws of the Era

The Hague Regulations on Land Warfare of 1907 state that “the attack or bombardment, by whatever means, of towns, villages, dwellings, or buildings which are undefended is prohibited”. Neither Nagasaki nor Hiroshima were undefended. Therefore, they were legitimate, legal targets.”

Same link as my last post-

Again, Indiscriminate? Nope- this was war- these areas were legitimate military targets- targets that were building the weapons of war to kill Americans with, Areas who were actively involved in the war-

Thanks fieldmarshaldj. And keep in mind that, besides the passage of years, that first bomb was a pimple on the ass of the stuff we've got now. And fairly ho-hum bolide impacts create such glasses, which is the reason the late Gene Shoemaker introduced impacts into geology.

The very fact that the ordinary people were voiceless subjects "educated" by totalitarians, deceived by pervasive propaganda and coerced by a police state, means that they were not exactly the ones who had a "choice." The ordinary people were not primary predators so much as primary victims.

You keep telling yourself that, if it comforts you. But it's not true. Japanese soldiers, drawn from the "ordinary people", showed a very high degree of sadism and a lack of common humanity that defies one's imagination. What kind of people could do THIS?

That's Japanese soldiers, with blank faces and dead eyes, driving a bayonet through a Chinese baby.

Baby-killing is a hideous crime.

Whether done by a bomb, abortion or a bayonet.

The Japanese also raped Chinese women to get them pregnant, then performed hideous experiments on the mother and baby. Then they either bayonetted the baby in the womb or cut it out and sewed various objects inside the woman's womb. Yeah, they were real sweethearts.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Downfall

My Dad was attached to the 24th Inf. Div. of the 8th Army and was he was scheduled to be part of Operation Coronet.

Admiral Leahy estimated that the invasion would cost 268,000 casualties. Personnel at the Navy Department estimated that the total losses to America would be between 1.7 and 4 million with 400,000 to 800,000 deaths. The same department estimated that there would be up to 10 million Japanese casualties.

I’m very thankful we developed and used this technology to end the war.
And saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
As a result thousands of Americans were able to come home home and be fathers and grandfathers .

I never expressed any doubt about Japanese soldiers committing huge crimes of atrocious cruelty during their countless military aggression during WWII. I neither denied no minimized that in any way.

I just pointed out that killing babies is a crime "whether done by a bomb, abortion or a bayonet." The crime is the killing; the method is a technicality.

This bombing attack was flown at 5-8K feet altitude. The B-29’s were lightly armored and flying as fast as they could. General LeMay didn't know that the updraft from the fires would be so violent that it would flip over the B-29’s and many aircrews were killed, my cousin, a pilot of one of the B-29s, was one of them. LeMay learned and never bombed at low level again.

IIRC there were fairly gusty winds in the Tokyo area that night, which when combined with the thermal updrafts made for some pretty hairy flying. I don’t think it ever developed a firestorm, but more of a sweep conflagration.

[[It’s an American idea that we must invade, conquer, occupy, and overthrow.]]

Huh? how many countries have we taken over ad claimed as our own? We were attacked by Japan- We didn’t invade them- We responded militarily, and ended the war quickly with superior firepower- Same with iraq, and other wars-

Apparently you missed the previous posts so:

The areas were not ‘indiscriminate targets’, they were strategic military targets intended to cripple the enemy militarily so badly that they surrendered- These ‘innocent civilians’ were working the factories that were making the weapons that were murdering Americans.

Apparently you would have rather-ed on ongoing costly war where millions of Americans were killed?

PL:EASE NOTE- Japanese civilians were warned well in advance that America was going to drop the bombs- don’t give us this crap about how they were murdered unaware- They continued making weapons and ammunition that were meant to murder Americans in an ongoing war- They were given the choice to surrender- but they refused- several times- We warned and warned and warned them!- They ignored us and refused to surrender! Their government was responsible for their deaths- NOT Us- Their government decided their lives were not worth saving- NOT US! We gave them every chance to surrender peacefully- to end the atrocity which by the way was VERY GRACIOUS of us to offer considering it was Japan who attacked us first!

Enough with the ‘America sucks” please- Thanks!
