WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD - INFORMATIONAL POST
May 13, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin

Posted on 05/13/2019 6:03:13 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

Our 'Greeneyes' has gone missing, so I have been asked to keep the Weekly Garden Thread rolling until she returns. If anyone knows her in Real Life, please post here and let us know what her situation is!

That said, I will be posting once a week, and I will TRY to stick to her schedule of a Friday Night/Saturday Morning Weekly Post, but it depends upon what is going on here at MY farm. (It's Spring; it's BUSY!)

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

Thank you. It does look a lot nicer now that there’s some water inside. I’m looking forward to the day I’m finished working on it so I can just enjoy having it there.

I've decided to go high tech this season and downloaded an Android app called Homegrown with Bonnie Plants. It lets me add each variety of pepper I grow and track its progress over the season so now I will know how many peppers I picked off of each individual plant and what date they started producing, along with pictures of each stage of growth.

That’s terrific!

I have a few ‘Bonnie’ plants going in, too. I wanted to compare their ‘Carbon’ tomato to ones I started from seed and I lucked out and found TWO seedlings in ONE pot - I always buy those, LOL! I also bought one of their ‘Black Cherry’ cherry tomatoes. I just plant one - I’m not into the cherry-types, but Beau likes to snack on them out in the garden.

Our local Walmart has a good selection of the Bonnie plants...and of course I hit all the local places that I can when I’m making my rounds. Got to keep my LOCAL BUSINESSES thriving!

THIS seasons garden challenge will be four young pups running around the yard all summer. *Rolleyes*

Maybe I can train them to sniff out the weeds? LOL! Fat chance!

If you have the patience, I would use the week killer you found, but using a paintbrush, brush it directly on the leaves with NO drips falling onto your Pachy!

It’s what I do for these thistles when I get them. You other option is digging, and that is a PITA and 9 times out of 10 you cannot get the whole root structure and it just grows back.

_______

I appreciate your reply.

The paint brush idea is no good for me. I tried that a few years ago. The watery consistency of all these poisons makes that "impossible". Dripping cannot be avoided.

Are you aware of any selective herbicides that can be sprayed on a large (100 ft. x 200 ft.) bed of various groudcovers?

_______________

I may try to add some pasty material to the liquid poison to turn it into something like a thick latex paint.... that way it wouldn't drip much.

No matter, it's all a major pain.

Thanks again.

I’m going to have to look into that herbicide. My yard is invaded with thistles as well. I’ve tried digging them up, mowing them when they’re small, etc. All that happens when I mow them is they bloom at 3” tall and still spread the seeds. And are short enough they hide their deadly spikiness until you STEP on them. Augh.-

__________________________

Please let me know what you learn.

I'm going to get in touch with the people who MAKE IT (manufacturer/biologists).

I MUST talk to the people who make the claims for the character of the product.

I'll be damned if I'm going to spray this MILESTONE on beds of pachysandra at this time of year when all the beautiful new growth is so very tender!

Bonnie doesn’t sell any of the plants I grow. They have an option to add plants not in the catalogue. You choose that then add a name, description and a picture if you want it. Then you save it and it puts it in the catalogue. Then you go to the catalogue, choose the plant you added and hit the plant button. That puts it in your personal catalogue, the one I posted a picture of.
The app is free if you want to look at it at the Google or Apple app store.

I don’t know about pachysandra but it looks like this herbicide is probably one I won’t use in my yard cuz I grow a lot of edible stuff there. I’m just going to have to be more vigilant about getting the dudes before they bloom at all.

I hate triffids, er I mean thistles.

Still waiting for the ground to dry out enough to till. I’m hoping it will be tomorrow. The tractor has been tuned up and is ready to go.

Way back in February I started some seeds for a Hardy Orange tree, that supposedly can handle zone 5 cold. Earlier this week, they finally started sprouting!

My baby chicks aren’t so little anymore. They’re about ready to go outside, but I’d rather be on my farm for that.

This year is going to be a trellis-intensive year. I’ve been assigned to grow so many pole beans, that I pretty much need around 2000 feet of trellis space! That’s row-feet, not square feet! I think I’ve come up with something fast and easy, but that can be taken apart and used to build more permanent ones later. We’ll see if that works!

Thank you, D, and prayers up that greeneyes is well. We’ve had connectivity issues here, so there’s always that.

The plant that has invaded my yard is Burdock. (I have kept them out of the flower & vegetable garden), but they show up in the most unique places. I hear they are edible. Has anyone eaten them or know what part to eat and how to cook? I should do some research.😉I would welcome any advice.

My NEXT suggestion was going to be to mix the weed killer with cooking oil or dish soap to make it stick better. :)

I THINK there might be a product on the market that also helps with this situation, but I can’t for the life of me remember it!

Look up how people get rid of Garlic Mustard and see if any of that advice applies.

Good Luck, and let us know if you find the Magic Bullet! :)

The one I’ve always wonted to try is digging up Chicory root (blue flower, grows wild along the roadside in mid-summer blooms when Queen Anne’s Lace and Orange Ditch Weeds are doing their thing) and roast it to make a coffee-like drink.

It’s a ‘thing’ down south and I remember my Dad loving some coffee blend he bought in LA, yellow can, pretty famous coffee house?

I’m going to watch this later. I’ll eat anything that doesn’t eat me first, LOL!

My friends tell me I’m saving money with my two gardens, but after I total up the cost of the fertilizer, mulch, red plastic, netting, trellises, green tie, bug pellets, drip hoses, electricity to run the pump and dozens of pony packs, I’ve far outweighed my expenses were I just to buy garlic; lettuce; snap peas; chard; maters; canteloupe; honeydew; squash; basil; oregano; strawbs and such, but oh, MAN...do they taste good!

Not to mention that whenever I want a snack or salad I just walk out my front or back door and pick some sugar snap peas, chard, lettuce and basil and I’ve got them in two minutes, blindingly fresh..as opposed to going to a grocery store.

Man, I love gardening!

Ed

What a fantastic idea!

I keep a garden journal but it’s a notebook...I’ll download that app.

Thanks!

I actually set aside an area of my back garden I’m going to keep untilled. My sister has a farm and she uses the no-till, just mulch process, she says it works.

So I’ll have an untilled section to compare it to my tilled section...could be interesting.
